I had debated about going to this last game all week long and finally I did go and have no regrets. The officating was probably as good as it can get but they often if not at all had the mike on to explain the calls and that double penalty was wierd and maybe deserved a good explanation.

This being the final game for SDSU and the next to last for UNC, I think our players on both sides had problems with the proper demeanor. As much as I love watching Hank McCall these past few seasons play his heart out, I was a little disappointed when he hit the endzone with the interception. If he had practiced Bud Grants advice of getting into the endzone and acting like you have been there before, SDSU would not have had the celebration penality. I am not sure if it had any affect, but I do think our guys were have problems being disciplined and in control today. But again they are probably less than 25 years old and it was in some cases their last game of their careers.

I to think having too many home games does not mean a higher average. So many fans probably lose interest after attending 5 games which is a normal home season.

I think with the weather detiorating during November, plus we had no promotion such as Beef Bowl theme to bring out the extra folks and explains the attendence of 1882. Senior Parents and senior day was the only promotion, plus the Pride was not back today to bring the extra fans.

I have personally felt for a long time that some SDSU fans would prefer a Pride Concert with football being played at the intermission. With a good band, this can happen.

******, anybody who's been to a football game in Brookings know that McCall is a great player and that I assume are fans, if not family of his always sit in the same endzone that he ran one back in. They seem to have a unsual amount of what seems to be specially made #21 Jackrabbit T-shirts worn. He's a senoir, I saw the celebration, it was'nt out of line.

It seems to me that there is some bad blood between SDSU and UNC in football. Does anyone else feel this way. I hope they do not play each other for a few years, then maybe the TIFF will go away and I can enjoy watching them play each other.

Growing up in Brookings and watching a number of games as CAS I always considered UNC to be the thug team from Colorado. And I assumed it was all UNC's fault. Because SDSU never seemed to get the personal foul (even USD) and other penalties like they seem to do verus the Bears.

Now having lived in Greeley, CO and receiving a masters from UNC and watching the Bears for the last five years I have decided they are a class act with athletics, players, coaches administration. They do not play dirty and I have gained my respect.

Listing to both Stig and Kay they both seem to say all the right things and state they have a ton of respect for each others programs.

But it seems that when both teams play, they are lots of extra pushing and shoving. Maybe it is because the season is coming to a close, maybe weather or maybe it is too very BUE COLLAR teams that play extremely hard with neither team willing to give an inch to each other.

          Anyone else have a take?

That is football, recent history has us been the whipping boys of UNC, I'd rather be giving than receiving. 2-0 in our recent era.

A little note on the Hank McCall celebration.  I was standing in the endzone with the family.  First off, no I am not one of the family but according to the referee, Hank spiked the ball.  Now if you looked at the replays as did the line judge that made the call, Hank pointed at the family when he was nearing the endzone, as he was getting to the endzone he reached out with the ball as the rest of the Jacks defense was coming at him and he dropped the ball, the only celebration was between him and the players not because of a spike as what was called. A quick flag for nothing.

Second, the double call occuring on the preceeding interception was for holding and a personal foul called by this same line judge because of a block made right on the sideline and our player laying on the Bears player.  Another iffy and marginal call. The holding call was back where the ball was intercepted. No comment on that.

This was a  reflection of using NCC officiating crews.  I am totally against there use because of the fact that this game is alot faster and these gentlemen can not keep up with the action.

Third, the mysterious fumble after the catch on the 8 yard line.  The catch was made, the player was down, the ball was let go and a Bears defender picks it up and all of a sudden we have a turn over.  All this after the dead ball whistle was blown.

As far as the chippy attitudes between the players...most of this was started by the Bears #1 Williams.  He consistantly was tying-up with our receivers after the whistle and then running to the officials whinning that we were throwing down with him.  Finally after the third personal call was made, he got his...twice I believe.

The Bears might be a class out fit but yesterday I would have to say that UNC stood for University with NO CLASS!

It was good that Cappy (Officiating Director) was at the game watching this crew, hopefully he uses his good judgement on grading them and this type of officiating does not continue.

Besides all of my dribble here I would like to say it was fun watching the Jacks Gridders this year, thanks for the fun and things can only get better as we increase our scholly base.

              GO JACKS!

I thought that was another instance where the refs seemed anxious to throw a flag. Hank didn't taunt anyone. He just pointed to fans (or family) in the end zone then handed the ball to the ref. That was another ridiculous call.

Part of what makes college football great is the genuine emotions evident during the games. Curtailing those emotions and celebrations hurts the game. Now, when you start getting to showing other teams up and rehearsed dances it's no longer a genuine emotion, but unsportsmanlike conduct. I think too often the poorer the official, the faster he is to throw a 15 yarder for celebrating. The good officials understand it's a good thing to be happy about a big play and will let it go. I have many refs in the family and they will all tell you. The best ref is one nobody even notices throughout the game.

BROOKINGS - The South Dakota State Jackrabbits bounced back strong from last week's loss to North Dakota State by shutting down Northern Colorado 30-14 at Coughlin Alumni Stadium on Saturday.

The game marks the end of SDSU's 2005 campaign as the Jackrabbits finish the season 6-5 overall and 3-2 in the Great West Football Conference - the school's second winning Division I-AA season in as many years.

And with the end of the season, SDSU said goodbye to a group of seniors that helped lead the Jackrabbits' early charge toward Division I success.

"You just can't say goodbye to 15 guys and not expect it to affect your program," said SDSU head coach John Stiegelmeier. "I mean that in two ways. You have to fill the holes, but the mark they made with their leadership and making plays on the field ... those are things coaches talk about for years on down the road. These guys are those kind of guys." . . . (read more)

Why is profanity necessary? Yes I know who Hank McCall is and yes he was a very good player. I say "was" since yesterday was his last game. I am sure he was happy to get the pick, but like I said, he disappointed me as I thought he was more mature and would have acted like he had been in the endzone before.  Judging by yesterday, he apparently hasn't.   This is not the first time SDSU has been called for excessive celebration, and not for a second do I not think our coaching staff has gone over this rule.

Also the refs were there to call the game and not give SDSU a few breaks because we were the home team, and because our guys wanted to celebrate in an excessive manner.  I think the refs made the right call and those who disagree with me can think what you like. BTW, I too saw the celebration and knew when it got to be five guys jumping up and down, SDSU was in trouble with the guys with the flags.  I blame the players not the refs.

I agree with SDSUFAN on this one, as soon as McCall spiked it and 4 guys were running towards him I knew a penalty was soon to follow, in fact I would have been surprised if a penalty wasn't called. This isn't the NFL, the refs are gonna call that one every time. We've gotten our fair share of these this year, its a good thing they've mostly happened in blow-outs where the penalties haven't really hurt us much.

I was sitting on the north end of the bleachers right behind the ref who threw the flag, the way he was smiling after and chatting with the ball crew around him i think he knew he maybe blew the call and threw a premature flag. I think Hank may have been caught up in the emotion but he really didn't do anything wrong, maybe spiked the ball, before being tackled by his teamates. By Stig's reaction after the play, patting Hank on the head as he ran back to the bench, he didn't think there was much cause for a flag either. If Stig agrees with call and the ref he will always pull the player aside as them come of the field. One more thing, i could be mistaken but i believe the rule states you can celebrate with your teamates as long as one doesn't try to isolate themselves during the celebration. so i don't think the flag would have came out for the five jacks jumping up and down, but who knows with the ref crew from yesterday. ???

I have been to every home game this year and one of the road ones and I don't ever remember us getting an excessive celebration penalty. That being said I think the only thing Hank did wrong was start to point the ball toward family a little early. I agree with 79, I don't think that a celebration among teammates would normally be flagged (especially on a defensive TD) unless they were singling out the other team.
I think at that point of the game the refs were starting to get worried about the game getting out of hand physically and probably wanted to try to squash anything they could. Another reason to spend some more money on better officials. The NDSU officials were Big 10 officials and did an excellent job. It would be well worth spending the extra money to get these guys at Coughlin next year.

JACKS02...as I said earlier, there was no spike by McCall.  Hank is not a show boat, wasnt in high school and never has been in his time with the Rabbits.

He dropped the ball and the referee called the celebration penalty for spiking, not excessive celebration by the team.  This came out of the mouth of that said referee to the ball boys after the call.

Now as far as the Jacks for the future, I think we need to let our staff do their job, get the schollies up to full speed and then we can all be quick to judge.  IMHO, we have already came a long way from our DII days and I think the Jackrabbits future looks bright!

Have to agree with the posts on attendance. Eight games is a lot of Saturdays and people just pick out the ones they want to attend -- and that usually doesn't include many games in November in South Dakota!

My wife and I seldom miss a game, but believing (rigthly as it turned out) that the Jacks would win handily, we choose to go to Nebraska to watch the Jackrabbit women crush the Big 12 Huskers 68-49! It was outstanding! And just FYI, in the loss to Drake 54-52...if you want to talk about refereeing...we got hosed big-time! We never got to the one-and-one in either half. And after grabbing the lead at halftime (with whining and grumbling Drakesters next to us), the Missouri Valley refs certainly decided that they weren't going to be part of letting us win. At one point, the fouls were SDSU 11, Drake 3. We killed them from the field, but had little luck getting to the line where they outscored us big time. If we were on defense, every drive towards the basket was a block, and when we were on offense, every drive was a charge. It was ridiculous. Nevertheless, hats off to two great games by the young Jackrabbit women!!!
