          Offense Wins Spring Game 26-20

The defense built an 18-0 lead, then the offense scored 26 unanswered points to win South Dakota State’s spring football game 26-20 Saturday at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium.

The defense stopped the offense on five three-down-and-out series (two points each), recorded two tackles for losses (two points) and had a fumble recovery by redshirt freshman defensive tackle Steve Bazata, Howells, NE, (six points) to get its lead.

The offense scored on a 3-yard run by redshirt freshman quarterback Ryan Crawford, Oro Valley, AZ, and a 50-yard pass play from Ryan Berry, Watertown, to Micah Johnson, Prescott, AZ, added points for plays over 30 yards – a 32 yard pass to Chris Doblar, Brookings, and the 50-yard pass to Johnson, plus a 35-yard run by Anthony Watson, Worthington, MN. . . . Game notes:

The O-line saw some changes. Starting tackles were Scott Gillen and Casey Knips, Guards were Preston Crumly and Mitch Erickson and Center was Mark Oelkers. I would suspect that either Crumly or Erickson moves down to Guard and Either Knips or Gillen starts at the other Tackle.

Jeff Hegge has been moved to safety and Brock Gentile and Tyler Koch started at corner. It looks like they will be backed up by Joseph Blackman and Justin Horn. The big pass plays (if memory serves me correct) were against the third string corners which either bodes well for our defense or bad for our receivers. Either way we are going to be young here and there could be some pains. Especially in our first game against Lacrosse who threw the ball at will against us last year.

Last years Arizona draft class looked pretty well, Crawford struggled at quarterback but had flashes. Jimmy Rogers looks to be the starting strong safety and both Isaiah Jackson and Kris Stone looked pretty good at LB.

Pretty decent crowd considering the weather, My guess would be 300-500 people. Solari was there but the TV cameras were conspicuously not there

The camera crews were probably in the Mount Vernon area.

BROOKINGS - Perhaps the biggest fear of football coaches during spring practice is losing a player to an injury.

Knowing two of their top quarterbacks were already sitting out Saturday's spring game, it's understandable why a big hit on backup Ryan Berry sucked the air out of South Dakota State's coaches and fans.

But Berry, who started two games in 2005 for the oft-injured Andy Kardoes, used it as motivation to rally the offense to a 26-20 victory. . . . (read more)

I would hope that the 3 TV stations in a market the size of SF would have more than one camera crew available to cover news of the day.

                    Re: Spring Ball

Come on now, we all know that SDSU is the red-headed step child in SD that nobody really cares about or apprecieates right now. Sooner or later everybody will want to jump on the bandwagon here in SD. Then we'll all have to decide if we want to help them up or kick them in the face as they get on.

The show must go on on

                      BY MIKE JOHNSON

The SDSU football team wrapped up its spring season Saturday with a spirited game at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium. Though a complex scoring system left the final score in question, head coach John Stiegelmeier said who won was secondary to getting a chance to see what his team could do in real game action, and making sure that no one was forced to the sidelines due to injury, which was a difficult task considering the conditions. . . .
