Maybe I'm a little naive, but I don't remember having Spring Football when I went to school. If they did, nobody really talked about it. Is this because we are D-1AA? Does the NCAA allow D-II to have Spring Football?

Just curious.

Spring football has been around for maybe 50 years or more. At one time way long ago, Pete Retzlaff and Doug Eggers NFL guys came back for the varsity-alumni game that was maybe in the mid 1950's and its been there ever since. It probably has not gotten the publicity it should get .

Same for me when I was at SDSU in the early 90's. It was there, it just wasn't talked about much. Given the focus on IAA football that has been associated with the move to D-I it is no suprise that excitement about the FB season including the spring game is at an all time high.

Next to the actual games, Spring Football was the best part about College Football in my opinion. Not so hot you feel like you're going to melt like fall ball. Plus, you've had a winter's worth of 5 a.m. workouts behind you and are just ready to strap on the pads and start doing some hitting and some actual football activities. The atmosphere is a little lighter and the emphasis is more on learning and trying things out instead of preparing for the long season ahead.
Remember those great spring days where everyone came out of the dorms and started up a flag football game because it was the first nice day in like 6 months? Well imagine preparing all winter long for that flag football game with waaay too early workouts and study sessions. That's how I always felt. I still miss it.

There was some hype about spring ball in the late 90's. It seemed like the game was always the same day as spring graduation. I'm glad they've gotten away from that.
Biggest problem with most of those 90's spring practices was the weather. I think every year I was there we got pushed back a few days because of snow or rain, thus ending on spring graduation day on occassion. The biggest problem with this time of year and spring practice is that 15 practices have to fit into a certain number of days (used to be 29 or 30) and you had to have so many days on followed by a day off, etc. So scheduling make up practices get tough toward the end of that window because they are limited by the calendar. Someday in the future an indoor facility will solve that, but probably not until my generation's kids are playing ball for the Jacks.
I realize the Jacks have just started spring ball but has anyone seen any stories regarding practice other than the standard press release. I noticed even USD has a story covering the first couple days of spring ball.

Last year the register was all over it. I hope they are again this year.
He hasn't shared anything new with me at this point. Just wondering if anyone else is seeing or hearing anything. I will report anything that he tells me that is truth........Hate to start any rumors...
