Good points. I couldn't listen to the game so I came to this message board and was disappointed when I read all the threads and saw the unfortunate words used in a couple of posts. Perhaps an apology should be quickly posted. (I have to kinda laugh...if the players read this message board, they'll think those posts were made by idiots and morons.)

I concur with egguy. Some ouf our M---N posters are a much greater embarassment to SDSU than any football loss could ever be. For you M-----Ns concur means agree.
Way to go Jacks. Way to go Andy.  Another great game for you and your team. You are one tough competitor. I will take the liberty to apologize to you for some of our M---N posters.
Keep up the good work and keep the FIRE within.

He obviously got frustrated with a late hit or a cheap shot and everyone knows you can't give a chance like that on the road.  We have been hit so much over the last three years with cheap penalties on the road he should be prepared for a moment like that.  He should have known better but that is what happens some times.

We won that is all that matters.

Now I will admit, I am a bit biased, I was the equipment manager for this team for the past three years and I love this team.  The kids are the best and the coaches work harder than 90% of us do in our current jobs.  Andy wants to win like none of you know and I am happy as hell for him today, as we all should be.
Granted Coaches do work very hard especially this time of the year. They dont make big bucks either and often have growing families. A source of a revolving door at SDSU.

I do hope Andy does learn from the penality. Getting frustrated in the work place can often get you your walking papers out the door. Self control is something learned and can be harder for some than it is for others. Losing it is never an excuse whether you are 22 or 102. It's distructive of purpose.

The win was big. Congrads to all of the program. I understand the crowd at McNeese will total 18 to 22k. Big game ahead.

It sounded like he stepped up at least a couple of times in critical 3rd down situations and made the stop. Ran their qb down from behind one time I believe.

                The whole team played well!

It just goes to show that we DON'T have to play PERFECT to win. Just HARD!

Have fun and kick the crap out of McNeese State.

Story from a Louisiana paper.  I can't wait for the Argus to hire Chirs' replacment.  We have chatted a couple of times and he says it shouldn't be long until SDSU once again has a beat writer:

THIBODAUX — The Nicholls State Colonels finally played at their own level. They also got beat at their own game.

South Dakota State University (1-3) used a ball-control offense and opportunistic defense to defeat the Colonels 24-17 for the Jackrabbits’ first win of the season Saturday afternoon at John L. Guidry Stadium.

The Colonels (1-3) came out sluggish and found themselves down 17-3 at the half and 24-3 going into the fourth quarter.

“There are not excuses. We have to play hard from start to finish,” Nicholls defensive back Jermaine Boggan said. “We came out very, very flat the first half.”  .  .  .  (read more)

Next day musings, driven by the stats
                    http://www.colonelsports.com/2006%20...ts/sdsu923.htm

Good offensive output, outgaining the Colonels 379-290. Better, we outgained NSU per play 6.3 to 4.7 yards.

Areas of concern: Nicholls was pretty obviously a ground-based team with a pretty ineffective passing attack. I think that was the key to this win, but our pass defense will still need to be better. No sacks, but only 13 passing attempts from NSU. Hopefully the addition of Sheehan to the D-line will help us generate more pressure on the QB to slow down more competent passing teams. We'll see.

Still too many mistakes. Three turnovers to NSU's one. Seven penalties to NSU's 3. Kardoes' silly personal foul penalty was jaw-droppingly dumb. A team captain needs to keep his composure on the field. Some of the comments here about Kardoes have been harsh, but when you do dumb things on the field, you invite harsh commentary.

I'm still concerned about the seeming (in)ability to make successful halftime adjustments. SDSU had outgained NSU 240-88 at the half, meaning we only had 91 yards of offense in the second half. Some of this might have been a more conservative, lead-protecting approach after we built the 24-3 lead, but against a better opponent, that same approach will likely get us beat.

But, it's a much-needed win for the Jackrabbits, and at last a big positive to build on. It's easy to focus on the negatives and minimize the big, big, big positive.

We won our first game this year.

We need to take what we've learned and build on it, improve, and get ready for the McNeese Cowboys next week. The good news is that Sagarin last week had McNeese State rated #33 in I-AA, actually lower than Nicholls State. Maybe we catch a bit of a scheduling break in that 1-2 McNeese got thumped by I-A Toledo 41-7 yesterday, and their only win is against a bad West Virginia Tech team that's 0-3 and hasn't scored a point while giving up 175 in the three games.

Louisiana's been good to the D-I Rabbits, we can hope that trend continues next week.

I agree that you invite criticism, but from your coaches.  There are only a few of us that can claim that at 22 years old we were in that intense of a situation and I would bet that many of us would have handled it similarly (judging by the way tempers flare here from the supposed adults that we are) .  Andy will need to learn from it, but fact of the matter is that we have a W, mistake or not.  If we had lost the game then Andy would be up for some harsh commentary.

I listened to every snap on WNAX. Great first 3 quarters nearly followed by a choke and a half in the 4th. As great as the win is to get, that 4th quarter exposed our greatest weakness, leadership.

I don't know how 2 pass plays get called, the first thrown downfield and the second picked-off when you have a lead, have run the ball successfully, and field position is the biggest issue. That can't happen.

Great expectations exist for this program and I expect them to learn from that huge mistake. Thank the lord they didn't go for it on 4th down when field position was again the issue. Our D-line and O-line dominated that game and yet we nearly gave it away.

Andy and Anthony can't put the ball on the ground, Andy can't throw that pick. Its that simple. If a fan can't handle that fact its that fans problem. In the end, it worked out but it shouldn't have been that close.

Nice job Jacks, the defense looks great. The offensive line played great. Improvement each and every week. Can't wait for Saturday.

I can't agree that coaches are the only people on Earth who have a right to criticize student-athletes. That puts student-athletes on a pedestal that's way too high--frankly, I think it would be a very unhealthy environment for the student athletes involved.

Part of the total experience of Division I athletics is the increased fan attention, and the increased intensity of that attention, good and bad. If a student-athlete can't handle that level of attention (and use it to elevate their performance), they probably would be better suited for competition at a different level than Division I--especially if they aspire to be a starting quarterback.

It's unreasonable to participate in any kind of public performance (especially one which people are paying to attend) without expecting public criticism--whether it's athletics, a concert, or a theatric play. That's just not how the world works--this is a part of the learning experience, too.

My friends on some of the teams up here would agree. I'm not always the nicest after a win, especially if it was a horrible win. But why do we criticize them? For me, I tell them what they could have done better during the game from what I see and hear. But they also understand I know that they have more potential than what they show. Especially my classmates from high school, I've seen the things they can do. Maybe I'm tough on my friends, but it gives them more fire to go harder and play with their balls to the wall. Is it fair we put pressure on them maybe, that's the whole reason of athletics to be put in pressure situations at times and overcome it. If you can't take it well then maybe you belong in the little leagues.

Overall, a great win for the Jackrabbits. Would have been nice to win 40-10, as we maybe should have, but oh well. I think this team is starting to come around. We all know that 9 out of 10 times we beat UWL, and if we didn't self destruct in the 2nd half against UNI we could be 3-1. We need to win these games if we want to reach the next level. Andy is really starting to play well. I can live with only throwing for 150 yards a game as long as he's completing the passes, getting postive rushing yards and limiting INT's. Andy's not a moron or an idiot, but that penalty was. I love it when kids play with the type of fire he does. But I think he's got to learn to take care of his body and limit the hits he takes. Defense really stepped up and played well. Our young D-line deserves a lot of credit, not just Sheehan. Great to see Watson back and playing well.

Looking forward to McNeese State next week and then coming home for the BEEF BOWL. I understand the group from Sturgis area will be around 50!
