    Re: Nicholls State Game

I don't know, we played fair against Northern Iowa, gave up a lot of rushing yards. That will need to be key for us this week, but we need our offense (which in first half last week) to get in gear. This will take a lot of pressure off the defense.

I think we maybe suprised, you never know. On any given Saturday.

Our Offense is avg. per game:
    123.3 rushing
    137 Passing
    260.3 total yards per game.

Offensive scoring 9 points per game

We have the personal and kicker - We just need that spark

South Dakota State (0-3) at Nicholls State (1-2)

WHEN/WHERE: Today, 2 p.m., John L. Guidry Stadium, Thibodaux, La.

COACHES: SDSU: John Stiegelmeier (9th year, 54-46); Nicholls St.: Jay Thomas (3rd year).

LAST TIME: This is the first meeting between the two teams. Nicholls State will play the Jacks in Brookings in 2008.

Last week: SDSU lost 27-17 at Northern Iowa; Nicholls State lost at Louisiana Tech 31-21.

RANKINGS: Nicholls State was ranked as high as No. 13 among Division I-AA schools to start the season, but after losses at Nebraska and Louisiana Tech, has fallen out of the poll.

ABOUT SDSU: The long road march continues. . . . this is the first of two trips to Louisiana in two weeks for the Jacks, who are 0-3 for the first time in 37 years and do not get back to Coughlin-Alumni until Oct. 7 when they are host to Central Arkansas in the Cereal Bowl.

The Jacks definitely put a scare into Northern Iowa last week but couldn't hang on at the UNI-Dome. SDSU controlled the flow for much of the first half with two successful touchdown drives, putting together the strongest half of football the team has played this year. SDSU appeared to be ready to score a third touchdown when Brock Gentile picked off a pass and returned it to the Panthers' 3. A penalty shoved the Jacks back, however, and the best they could muster was a Parker Douglass field goal that put them up 17-3.

Panthers' running back Corey Lewis gained 196 yards on 16 carries in the contest. That, coupled with two second-half SDSU turnovers, made the last 30 minutes much tougher than the first. Running back Cory Koenig had 52 yards in 17 carries, and quarterback Andy Kardoes completed 17 of 26 passes for 173 yards for his best game of the year.

The key now for the Jacks will be in sustaining the momentum; they've been outscored 54-0 in the second halves of their games this season.

Koenig is SDSU's leading rusher with 301 yards. Anthony Watson, a 1,000-yard rusher two years ago who ran for 908 last year, largely has been relegated to special teams duty so far this season. He sat out the first game for academic reasons.

Linebacker Justin Kubesh, last week's SDSU defensive player of the game, leads the team with 24 tackles. Douglass, a junior, is just 12 points away from tying the school record set by Adam Vinatieri. He has 173 points for his career.

ABOUT NICHOLLS STATE: They're the Colonels, and they have to be looking forward to taking on somebody their own size for a change. Nicholls State took a paycheck and got slugged around (56-7) at Nebraska two weeks ago, but held a 21-7 lead over Division I-A Louisiana Tech last week before slowing down in the second half. Looking at their cumulative stats, you'd have to conclude they have yet to decide on a go-to ballcarrier. Six players have 16 or more carries, led by junior Broderick Cole, a 5-11, 230-pound fullback with 33 carries who has started every game of his three-year career.

The Jacks will be spared the trouble of worrying much about the pass against the Colonels, who have attempted just 18 in their first three games, completing seven for 149 yards.

Nicholls State was picked to finish third this year in the Southland Conference after winning a league title last year. . . . (read more)
