Re: Central Arkansas - Beef Bowl

    Thanks for all the info.

I did manage to get a room Saturday night in Brookings at the Staurolite.

Sunday morning I will drive over to Marshall and then take 19 into Northfield.

Thanks again, I look forward to the trip and the game.

May even sample some Beef, but as we in the south all know, beef can not be bar-b-que.

you'll be long snuggling in the sheets with Mrs. UCA by the time it gets to 49. Unless you count that windchill!

                          BEARS BEGIN TOUGH ROAD STRETCH
                          FOOTBALL • Oct 5, 2006

CONWAY, Ark _ When the University of Central Arkansas Bears board their flight to South Dakota to take on the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, they will begin an 11-day odyssey that will take them more than 6,500 miles to play three games.

But head coach Clint Conque isn't viewing the upcoming stretch as an extended road trip that requires any sort of momentum from one game to the next, opting instead to take it one trip at a time.

"It's just one game," he said. "It's the biggest game of the season because it's the next game. We have some goals set for our team out there and we haven't attained any, but we've put ourself in a position to attain those.

"This game would be the next block on the foundation. It's a big game for a couple of reasons, but it's only one game. We've got to take them one at a time."

When the next one comes on Saturday, Conque knows his team will be in for a rigid test against a team he feels is significantly better than its 2-3 record. Much like Stephen F. Austin, which entered the 37-35 UCA victory winless, the Jackrabbits aren't a bad team – they've just played very, very good ones.

"They're very well-coached, very big, and they have a very physical offensive line," Conque said. "They've got a physical defensive line and that's of concern to me. These guys on the ends are in that 265-270 (-pound) range and that presents some problems in the run game."

One major concern for Conque is the gritty, determined play of SDSU quarterback Andy Kardoes, who was taken to the hospital during last week's game with McNeese State, but returned to action in the Jackrabbits' win.

"He makes them go," Conque said. "He's a fierce competitor. They thought he broke his jaw last week and then he comes back and leads them on three scoring drives to win that game. And they have a great kicker, too. In that game they didn't try to run a play at the end to get closer, they just took a knee and let him pound a 46-yarder. They've got a lot of confidence in him."

The Bears will attend classes Friday morning and leave Estes Stadium early in the afternoon to head north for a game that will kick off at 7 p.m. Saturday. Despite a South Dakota nighttime kickoff in October, Conque said the temperature shouldn't be a factor in the game.

"It's going to be unseasonably warm so we'll be fine from that standpoint," he said. "One thing I am concerned about is it's supposed to be windy during the day with winds of 25-30 mph. We expect that to lay down some before kickoff, though. Somebody like me who wants to throw the football would rather it rain than be extremely windy.

"But we've had some wind here the last two Thursdays so we've had the opportunity to practice in that environment. But both teams will have to play in the conditions, whatever they are."

The physical condition of the Bears is another thing Conque has had to monitor all week. With several key players dinged up, the staff has made adjustments in practice throughout the week.

"We had to change some things to make sure our players are as healthy and fresh as possible," he said, noting that linebacker Corey McMurrian's hamstring injury is his biggest concern.

"Today we went in helmets to take the physical element out of it. I'm pleased with the way the offense has responded, and the defense has been a little disjointed with guys we've held out and class schedules. But they've been attentive, and everybody's had a good attitude this week.

"We made some personnel changes and we think those have been received in positive ways by both the players we've elevated and those we've challenged."

When Saturday's Beef Bowl gets underway, it will be the first time in a month that SDSU has played in front of the home crowd – a factor Conque expects to make a difficult game even tougher....
