    Re: Tidbits from the top

I don't know if it was Pabst but it was some beer company but it was in the mid 70's when the Union was built.  Of course it was nixed.

But then, they're gonna try to drop the Union from the top of the Campanile or something, aren't they? Or am I thinking of a different show?

Also the Coors family helped financially with the building of Nottingham Field.

I have a hard time believing that Budweiser is so hard up and determined to spend advertizing dollars, that they will come to Brookings SD and build a football staduim just to get 11,000 students to buy their beer. Its sounds like beer talk to me and nothing more.

I also recall another rumor running around Brookings a while back and that was the notion that Cabella's wanted to build a store in the old KMart store and some how the City Commissioner nixed the idea. That was another bald face rumor. Cabella would never have considered Brookings because the traffic up I-29 is no where the traffic that passes through Mitchell on I-90 and there is just not the same amount of people to make a Cabella store work. I think Budwiser would draw similar marketing observations.

A individual who I know and was involved in economic development with the Brookings Chamber of Commerce  said its been a real uphill battle to get big box retailers of any sort to come to Brookings. He also told me that they had tried hard to get Scheels to build in Brookings and that was a no go too. (Not a big enough market)
Thats why there was the vote to approve the subsidy for Lowes Home Improvement store as it too is a gamble to get other retailers to come to Brookings. Watertown with a larger trade area has had much better success in attracting retailers and at times this is cutting into the Brookings shopping area.

Unless some one else can prove differently, the Budweiser staduim in exchange for beer sales is just beer talk. It would require BOR approval and even if that approval came with ease, the market of Brookings is not sufficient to pay for a new staduim. I apologize for being off topic.

Our new staduim will happen, but it will happen with small donations mostly and maybe we will find a person who wants to give big time, but the big donors are  what Sid Bostic and Keith Mehlum are working very hard to find in reaching our 20 million dollar goal and maybe beyond that.
I know it's not really the point, but how do you figure there's not enough people to make it work? There must be something I'm missing. The 2000 census figures show the following:

Mitchell: 14558 (I suppose without Mitchell Tech students?)
            Brookings: 18504 (without students)

Cabela's doesn't thrive on the in-town customers. It's the people from the very heavily travelled Interstate 90 that Cabela's is after.

Actually, the Census figure for Brookings is supposed to include college students, who are legally considered by the Census as residing in the town where they're going to college, not where they originally come from.

Not that all students properly report their residences, mind you . . .

Bingo!!! Thats what I said in my post. The hunters going and coming to the Black Hills and the anglers headed to the Big Muddy probably outnumber the Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri anglers who head to northern SD for fishing at places such as Big Stone.

Sorry I did not spell Cabela's right.

Talk to anyone who is connected to the chamber and you will find that attracting retailers to Brookings has been an up hill battle. Granted there are some retailers who want the big box guys to stay out of Brookings too.

Budweiser has a number of opportunities to expand their markets I am sure, I just dont think they need to come after the football crowds at SDSU, let alone build a staduim. For an NFL franchise yes, I can see that happening.

                    Re: Tidbits from the top

About Cabela's. What they usually do is a study that looks for where they can draw in the most amount of people from a large region. When they did this they probably looked at eastern south dakota and found that by putting the store in mitchell they could bring in people from the east (sioux falls, brookings, etc.) and also would bring in people from the west (chamberlain, pierre, vermantown, etc). Then they centrally locate the store. Instead of putting cabela's in Fargo, they went to east Grand Forks, figuring they would draw from fargo, devils lake, western MN,. If you look at most of their stores, they are not always in the biggest town, but as centrally located to the largest populations they can get. There first large store is in Owatana (i believe). Brookings was probably to close to fargo (and the GF location) to draw people from ND and MN, this is why (along with the interstate traffic) it ended up in Mitchell. When Cabelas built in East Grand Forks, Scheels was the only big sporting goods store in Fargo. Since then Scheels built a larger store, and Gander Mountain, and Sportsmans Warehouse have built in Fargo. Personal opinion, Fleet farm still has the lowest prices for fishing, and most hunting. They dont have the large variety of the other stores though.

Thanks Jack3467, I would think you are thinking what the Cabela marketing people were thinking. The Cabela rumor in Brookings was all rumor and it had more legs than it deserved. To get back on topic, we are the people who will make these things like scholarships and staduims happen. Its nice to have a big donor do it for us and we may still find one. I do not know of any  alum who is very visible in the Budweiser organization but if there were such a person, then the staduim rumor might have some substance. I believe its in the state statutes a law that prohibits alchohol beverages of any kind being sold or consumed on state owned property. This probably is why the Student Union idea was dead on arrival. I don't know how the Backyard concept fits into this but I am not about to go complaining to the BOR.

CAS stands for Coughlin-Alumni. Charles Coughlin came forward with 50 grand and the alums did the rest. So the staduim is properly named, but I will agree we need to make many upgrades plus get all our scholarships fully endowed. Its a full plate no doubt about that.
