    Re: Tidbits from the top

When the Student Union was originally built back in the 70's, a beer company was willing to put up a big chunk of change if they put in a Pub in the Union. That never happened.

Not really off topic, more appropriately on logic. I, too, remember hearing the Cabela's rumor, not really sure of the specifics, but it was before Kmart even closed. Beside the I-90 v. I-29 traffic, a major factor in Cabela's location was the presence of a very good friend of the Cabela family and custom fishing rod builder in Mitchell.

The whole beer rumors are a bit absurd. Since the union serves mostly freshman and sophmores, what good would a tap do, even back when 18 year olds could drink 3.2 legally?

        Re: Tidbits from the top

I would really like to see the Athletic Dept and others communicate what the vision is with Coughlin both short term and long term. I think artist renderings or a scaled model set up in Coughlin/Frost would be a great opportunity for people to see what is on the drawing board so they can tell others and get behind it with their wallets. It seems pockets of people know what is going on, but it's a great start for Stig and others to really communicate it to the public. Many people like me are visual and once they see a scaled model can appreciate what the plan is. The priority is and should be the scholarships first, but next we need a marketing campaign to show people where we want to take our athletic facilities so we can compete with other DI institutions and get the best recruits available.

I can still remember looking at the model of the building that was supposed to be completed sometime in '96 or '97. It was supposed to be on the East side of the current field. I remember I was impressed. It turned into a running joke amongst the players as each new class was told it was supposed to be completed sometime during their sophmore season. I think Daly even kept the model in his office. Let's hope this idea moves past the model stage. We really need it.

I'm not sure a model will get everyone on board, they will need something a bit more concrete like a well planned fundraising drive.

I remember this thing coming out my sophomore year (Spring '93). It was rather humorus after a while because everyone knew there was no way it was going to happen, but yet they still kept using it as a selling point. Hopefully this time the planning and financing is done well in advance of too much public display so that it doesn't end up in a storage room somewhere with a "Remember when..." type of history.

All I can say is if this new facility comes to fruition, thanks to Fred, Peggy, and everyone else involved in this move forward because without the move to DI this would never have happened.

Here is a plan i drew up on MS Paint for Coughlin.  It is nothing special and not detailed at all, but I think this layout is the best for fooball stadiums.  I have it broke down into three phases.  First would be constructing East grand stands, then would be the demolishion of the West stands and rebuilding them.  I would place the concourse level up hight than it currently is so there could be more of a bowl including grass seating on the South side.  I'm not sure how the new Indoor facilty would fit in with the stadium, but I think it would atleast provide lockerrooms.  If not they could be built under the stands.

Baseball had a similar model for Huether field updates.  The original plan was to build a wrap around grandstand that was supposed to be completed by my junior year (2000) .  That worked out real well considering they turned it into a parking lot the day after the season ended my senior year.  Sorry, I think I'll be a little bitter about losing that field for quite a while.

Your not going to get people to invest in a fundraising drive unless someone paints the picture of what we are trying to accomplish. There has to be some marketing support to the drive or its just the school asking for more money for another phanton project. It seems there has been money in the past that has been collected via taxes, fundraising etc and those funds didn't reach their intended target. This has to be a very public campaign that hits everyone connected to SDSU.

Artist renderings are out there. I am just not sure where they are being seen. I do know that the plans were shown to recruits and their families.

By the way I can remember back to 88 or so when someone drew up plans for a new locker room. It was the talk of the team for a while.

Good Job Charger 13. I have wondered if some modifications to the west side could be made and leave it as it is but maybe after mentioning what I see current wrong, it might be just as well to start over. Phase 2 probably is needed for the reasons other reason than that I will mention.

The aisles on the west side are way too narrow and back in1962, they did not have to worry about all the regulations and they built accordingly. Another problem is no hand rails once you are past the tunnel opening and assending upward. This is not good for older people and those with disabilities. Also if after a good crowd and people leave in mass there is a a danger of one person falling in the upper portion of the aisle and bowling the rest down while everyone is leaving and it has nearly happen at some of the bigger crowd games, its spooky and with no hand rails, period, one person falling into the next has a domino affect. Also if you look underneath the west side you do see openings and gaps between rows. I dont know if that was an intended method of draining moisture after rains and snow or if the structure itself is faulty.

None the less I like your plan.

You're probably right. I actually am pretty busy, but I have an interest in stadium design and this only took like 30 minutes to draw. I wish I could get my hands on the actual long term stadium plans and make copies of them. I knew someone that had a copy of the athletic facility long term plan, but I do not know if they still have it. I was very impressed when I looked at it. I think showing people what their money is going for is part of a well planned fund drive. People do not want to throw money at a black hole. I wish they would of had drawings up on the internet for the new baseball and softball fields as well. The Athletic Department is doing a good job with the transition, but if they want to raise more money give people something to look at.

When I was a student (early 80's) I was told that Pabst wanted to pay for then current student union in exchange for an exclusive contract to last for a number of years (I can't remember how many years). I don't know if that was true. At that time beer was still allowed in dorms and the pressure to reduce drinking among college students was no where near today's level. If the state wouldn't do it then, never happen now.
