  • Re: Pride won't play at November games?

I wonder if the University of Michigan Marching band is going to be in the stands at Michigan Stadium for the Michigan vs. Ohio State game on Nov. 17th?

I'm going to go over to their board and post the question.

My guess is the answer will be that it is too cold and the logistics this close to the Rose Bowl just wouldn't allow it.

I am not questioning the band members, but I am questioning the decision of the leadership...

Saw this on Bisonville. Apparently the GSB is NOT coming:

        Re: NDSU Band

The Band is not marching at SDSU mostly because of money. They only have enough for one road trip a year, and Minnesota was that one. I was in the band for several years, and have had many conversations about SDSU with the GSB Director of Bands, and he has NEVER expressed to me a chip on his shoulder towards the SDSU band director. If you notice, SDSU's band doesn't move very much on the field, because they are HUGE. NDSU's band, although the shapes may not make much sense, do move ALOT more. The NDSU band tends to play a little better as well, because they are smaller. But I digress. The NDSU Director of Bands would take the band to SDSU in a second if A. They had the budget and B. SDSU's band was marching.

agree 100%. I have little doubt that given the choice, most band members would probably opt to play. They usually seem to have a legitimately good time at the games. Most hail from the midwest and have played in colder weather, so that wouldn't scare them. Hell, there may be a fair share of the band members at the game as just fans like the rest of us.

I don't know if I am excited or bracing myself to be disappointed, but this really happened to me about 45 minutes ago. As I walking to my Makeup test for Jazz Blues and Rock in Lincoln Music Hall, I could help but notice that the Pride's drum majors were discussing in a room I had to pass through. As I passed they broke conversation, and stated this, and this is a direct quote, "Well we need to tell everyone about the game at rehersal." I don't know what this means, but I know what I want it to mean. Just thought I put that on here just so everyone can have a little hope.

I have heard the same rumblings today.

When we are in the stands getting ready to settle in for the game, the sound from the horizon will at first be faint and gain strength as the Pride comes into CAS leading the team onto the field. The crowd goes crazy. Don't tell anyone so it will be a bigger surprise.

EDIT: DA** IT, I wasn't going to post on this anymore.

That'd be funny... Have everyone get all worked up about them not showing up for the game, then magically they show up. Its a big conspiracy...

I am told just now that the band leadership has done an about face and the band will be at the Nov. 17 NDSU game "in some form." The band's seats for the game are being saved, and they'll at least be there in large enough numbers to play the fight song, etc. They won't be present for SUU.

My guess: The band leadership (remember, this isn't about the kids in the band, it's about a bad decision by the band leadership) now understands that they'll be expected to play at all home events in the future.

I hope this is true and I hope the band leadership has learned something from this.

I have to say that this just put a big smile on my face!

Now, there is one thing left to do. Let's all pitch in and help them get that last 100K they need for Pasadena. They are great representatives of SDSU and the State of South Dakota!

EVERYONE is takes pride in The Pride and they will help make Nov. 17th the huge event that it has the potential to be!

Thanks to whomever helped with changing the minds of the powers that be!

Agreed, if they are at the NDSU game a "Pride" booster I will continue to be. Might be the loudest ovation they have ever gotten.

I hope those rumors are true!

Does anyone recall the Pride playing at a November game? (I'm talking about ever...I can't think of a time when they played that late. So, a November game may be something new for the Pride.)

I agree with the prior poster: support the Pride by sending checks for the Rose Parade trip. Put a note with the check "Thanks for playing at the NDSU game!"

They played in November a couple of years ago for Hobo Day.

Good idea. I would note that this change got done not by creating a public spectacle which would only have made certain people dig in their heels. It was private conversations with people in high places that led the pride leadership to rethink their prior decision. A public spectacle would only have embarrassed the whole university. Sometimes, when there are huge egos involved, it's better to work behind the scenes. And I know that the discussion on this board was a factor, however small, in applying that subtle pressure.
