Wish Zenner would have got more carries in the second half. With a big lead, and you have the nation's leading rusher and you want the clock to run, feed the beast ! And not going for it on 4th and one deep in YSU territory in the second half was not a good coaching decision.

For much of the game, we were playing faultless football. For part of the second half, we showed we are still capable of playing football badly. Fortunately, 41 points on the board can cover for a lot of miscues!

Sumner looked like he picked up where he was last season. I thought for a while he was going to set the single-season record for TD passes (I believe it is 7, Ryan Berry against Illinois State, in the snow at CAS). The guy proved to himself he has the right stuff!

The referee's "San Diego State" misstatement was priceless. The crowd ate him and all he could do was smile sheepishly and say over his mic: "I apologize". And then we boo'ed some more. I don't know how loud the booing may be on the video but if it's an accurate video, it might have some comedy value if Tyler M shows the ref's blooper on Jackrabbit Insider tomorrow night.

I think part of the second half let down could have been from the student section pretty much vanishing at half time. The first halgf they were able to feed off the close to 15,000 jacks fans there and after half they there migh have bee 10,000. The defense was on the field most of the game because of the quick scores of the offense and in the second half we needed a grind out the clock scoring drie to really deflate YSU, But 1 and 0 which makes it a great day to be a Jackrabbit.

Good intro to TV's story in today's Argus:

On the 100th anniversary of Hobo Day, South Dakota State got the passing performance for which it seemingly had waited a century.
It was the Jackrabbits’ best air assault of the season by far – quarterback Austin Sumner threw for 351 yards with a career-high five touchdowns – and more than enough to offset a clunky finish in a 41-28 victory over No. 22-ranked Youngstown State before a crowd of 14,966 at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium.

My count and media guide count is that the series stands 9-4 SDSU favor. The four losses occurred in 1942, 1969, 1974 and 1979.

You have to sympathize with their fans just a little, even with the snarky comments. They are watching what has to be one of the most monumental collapses in FCS poll history - from being ranked 3rd in the nation to losing 4 games in a row. After the loss to UNI and seeing the reaction here,I can't imagine what it would be like if we were in their shoes.

Plus they are spoiled by the Tressel years of four NC's. Before Tressel most the YSU fans did not give the penquins much attention. High school football is king out that way and YSU has to do something impressive like winning a NC to get their attention. They should be a top five team every year with the talent that those high schools around them produce. I dont know what the problem is. Is it coaching? Wofford seems very capable. He mentioned preparing to stop the run, but their defensive backs seemed a little suspect in prior games and more so yesterday. That seems to be the major weakness plus turning the ball over. So its re-group time. Wofford has been there three years now so he is takien ownership of the program.

At least most of the fans here respect the difficulty of all conference games. When we have lost, I don't recall a lot of griping about how bad another conference team is. All conference games are tough, YSU fans. And if a team is 4-1 in THIS conference, it is a good team. Period.

I went along on SDSU's first D1 visit to Youngstown a few years ago. The patronizing attitude from the YSU staff was unbelievable. Cute little Jackrabbits, coming in to play the big, bad Penguins. They barely beat us that day. And we have beat them every time since.

Agree. I can't see the logic in trying a FG when your up big in the 2nd half and deep in the opponents territory. The clock is the most important factor not a shot at a 3 points. I would have liked to see a lot more running in the 2nd half as well but I suspect the defensive alignment suggested that passing remained the best option. It sure seemed to me like Zenner was making the most of what space the O-line was providing and I expect the Jacks could have moved the ball and run more clock without giving up another pick 6. I'm clearly not qualified to make the decisions only to criticize and look like a fool.

Great day, great time, tailgate was fantastic. Patio heaters worked well. Can't wait to listen to the SIU game next Saturday. Hunt pheasants at 10 am and be home in time for the 2 pm kickoff. Should be one heck of a battle.

I feel sorry for the coaches a lot of times. It's awkward for me listening to their post game comments and hearing the stress they are feeling comming out of their voice and watching the nervous movements, and trying to find the right words to say to console a bunch of rabid , hurtfull, fans on a fan board. Not all fans, mind you. Then i get this picture, like an old silent movie of a little kid, dressed poorly ,hugging his pants leg while he's begging for food, not for him, but for the kid.I realize,a coach takes on a job and he's got to perform, but in real life, somthings are just more important to me than just winning and losing games. Then there's someone like Jerry Sandusky(sp)Just the name says it all.For the most part,I would be too soft hearted to fire anybody, that's why they hire supervisors.....j/k

I really do like TV's questioning,I think he feels sympathy for these guys and gals too,he throws a lot of softballs, and asks his leading questions to more favorable things for the coach to talk about, like the good things his team did. They alway's seem to relax a little after Terry asks questions.

I didn't mean for this post to be true confessions, but it's turning out to be that way,my apologies, but sometimes I let my passion for Jackrabbit athletics cloud my good judgement, and i too am guilty of criticizing our coaches too much when we lose,I'm trying to work on that.

If this was the attitude then let them think they're getting beat by inferior teams forever.

What a game! Sumner looked a little off at first (that first pass to Kool should have been a TD) but holy crap did he turn it around. Play action on the first play of the game and my heart was swooning. When we play like we did in the first half, we will be tough to beat. I really wish we had NDSU at home this year.

The weather was great. A little bit chilly, but definitely cannot complain. Hope everyone had a happy Hobo Day!

Well, if it yields those kind of results, I'm going to lose complete faith in the pass game after every game like I did last week. That was a much-needed showing, though there were some missteps. AR had a nice game, but some struggles. The pic was on him. But I'll sign on for what I saw yesterday. Three great quarters of football before it got ugly and a bit too close. Great to see the D get some turnovers. And the O protected the ball. I must grant that I about blew a gasket when, with four minutes left and only a 13-point lead, we put much of the second string offense in, including QB and RB. Everybody who was paying attention to the game and knows anything about football was muttering in the stands. It was a very foolish decision. Thankfully, the D was up to the task after we ran three plays and punted. Why do we put the second string in for that series, then put Sumner back in for victory formation to take a knee? I don't understand.

The official saying "San Diego State University" turned out to be one of the funniest things I've seen in a long, long time. Because he said it, and the crowd just started booing him. And he realized it and dropped his head because he knew what he said. It was like when you yell at your kid and they know they're wrong and there's nothing but shame, so the head just drops. Then, as he wrapped up the call, he said over the speaker, "I apologize." That was hilarious. It got big laughs in my section.

Very disapointed that the fans left so early. a third of the West Side was easily gone by the start of the third quarter. I would say half was gone by the start of the 4th quarter. The East side had thinned out considerably two. We have way to main "fair weather" fans. This is not good when you have to bid to host playoff games.
