    Re: 2012 Recruiting List

I picked South Dakota State because I visited the school last weekend and I fell in love with the facilities, students,” Rodriguez said. “The coaches really love me and they are looking for a speed guy to play right away as a freshman running back even though I’m going to miss playing corner.
I might be reading too much into this, but maybe this means Kool will be moving back to receiver.

Don't know why the coaching staff would need a true freshman to play right away if they planned on keeping both returners at the running back position (Kool and Zenner) plus have a RS Freshman back like Reggie Gandy, who was highly touted and won 3 scout team "PotW", coming into the fold. Also, Winterboer always seemed to get positive reviews from the coaching staff.

Gretna is the same school as current Jackrabbit, WR Brandon Hubert.
He is also walking on at Nebraska.

    Nice Find.

Interesting to see SDSU sign a small, speed running back that could play right away.

Could be we are already seeing the changes from Meadows to Eidness since I don't remember SDSU having too many small, speed guys at the RB position. Well, now that I think about it, Kool sorta fits that definition.

While this discussion is drifting away from our 2012 recruiting class, one thing to remember about walk-ons is they can get other financial aid. While several kids have passed up full ride scholarship offers at State to walk on at programs like the Huskers, they could have received academic schollys or Pell grants. The Huskers have more academic All-Americans than any other university. I'm sure you can scour the list and find many who started out as walkons. In SDSU's favor for walkons, those kids could get other scholarships or other aid that would make them competitive with D2 programs that may not be offering full-rides.

New commit Isaac Rodriguez from Florida:
Isaac Rodriguez, a speedy athlete — running back, receiver, cornerback — for the high-powered Orlando Freedom football team this past season, has committed to signing to play with NCAA Division I-AA South Dakota State, joining former Orlando Boone defensive back Joe Martinson at SDSU.

“I picked South Dakota State because I visited the school last weekend and I fell in love with the facilities, students,” Rodriguez said. “The coaches really love me and they are looking for a speed guy to play right away as a freshman running back even though I’m going to miss playing corner......

Seems like in the Tom Osborne days, there were a ton of guys who walked on and hung around to get one year of scholarship money and a Orange Bowl ring. On senior day the Omaha World Herald would print their picture and bio and mention where they could have went and played on a scholarship.

I still do not get it, and many of those guys had offers from the NCC but turned them down to walk on. Its the adventure part of life that resides in a mind of 19-25 age range, where people follow where it takes them. Bo no doubt wants to get back to that level, but with SDSU and USD offers, it might now be different. I think SDSU should step up their recruiting efforts in Nebraska. There are a ton of good athletes as there are in Wisconsin where you have one large mega program and everyone else is D3, I believe. Minnesota a bit different with a host of D2 schools, but if we hit all three states, I think we can come up with a good recruiting class each year.

Although at Nebraska this year - I want to say that I heard (or was told) that due to injuries this year, there were 10 or 11 kids that were walk-ons that started sometime during the year. That seems like A LOT to me, especially at Nebraska. (Although back in TO's day - it happened more, so it seems)

    The "Rudy" syndrome, i guess.

I'm the opposite,I'd work ten times harder for someone who appreciates it by helping me pay for my education, than someone who "expects" it, but gives you nothing in return (risking injury that affects your life later on )
