Why not play the corners to jam, they were picking us a part because they could find the seams and they were timed perfectly. Why not make them work to get open and throw off the timing issues. set a safety back incase of a bad beat and let the corners have their way first. Its to easy it seems at times passing against us. Also Dline needs to get more pressure on the QB, if the line cant do it, we need to blitz more just so Qbs are not standing in the pocket watching for the right moment. rarely did they look out of place passing, I give that to a solid and talents QB they had, but to soft coverage and lack of pressure by us.
We play way to soft and will need to change against So. Illinois or they will score 50 against us

      Re: Is it time?

The reason our corners aren't able to play up close and jam them at the line is because we're rolling up a safety and largely playing a type of cover 3 scheme which menas there is no one to help the corner over the top. Our inability to stop the run is the problem with giving up big pass plays. We are having to commit a safety for run support which opens up the pass. Last year's defense was so good because we could play a base coverage up front and no one could run on us. That allowed for us to open up the blitz package and allow for our secondary to focus more on the pass. Pretty simple x's and o's really. I am guilty of saying we're not aggressive enough on D many times, but that's not always the solution either. Living and dying by the blitz means you're constantly open to the big plays.

It all starts with the D-line. They are not playing consistently well and are not getting pressure which means the other team's offensive lineman are getting a bigger push which narrows down the lanes for the linebackers to run to daylight which limits the linebackers' abilities to make tackles at or near the line of scrimmage which means we end up having to roll a safety up for extra run support which means the DB's have to play a more cushioned zone which allows for other teams to complete the short pass much easier.

Would love to see us recruit some receivers in the 6'3 range like WIU had. They seemed to just tower over our DB's and go up and get the jump ball.

A lot of people thought our O line was the lesser of the 2 lines. I feel right now the D line is behind the Oline. I figured Fisher, Thompson, Steffen, to be a group ready for a break out leader. I dont see us having that Legit lineman, the Schroeder or Batten type.

Injuries seem to have taken a heavy toll in both the D-backfield and the D-line. i noticed that Antonio Thompson didn't play against WIU. Parnell, Kjerstad and Basham (I think) were among the previously wounded. Couple those losses with the graduation of a few stud linemen and linebackers, and there's some big holes that are still being filled.

                Ditto.

We do miss Danny Batten. Look what happened to the Packers when Clay Matthews had to leave the game Sunday. Jake Steffen does a good job of applying pressure, but he still is a hair undersized. Maybe next year he will be Danny Batten. Plus Dijon Starr can pass rush from DT. He will be there next year too.

D - coordinator blitzed at the right time Saturday. Jeske's sack was a thing of beauty at exactly the right time.

Did you like Stig's comment about Jeske's tackles?

“When your safety is making 17 tackles, No. 1 he’s earning his scholarship,” coach John Stiegelmeier said. “No. 2, that’s way too many for somebody back there to be making.”
