Not a football ex-player or anything, but can't you have a guy play like two or three yards off a wide receiver & stay with him & switch off with another guy further down the field? (is it called zone coverage?)That way, he's more or less "covered " all the time , which gives the DL guys a little more time to disengage from thier blocker & get some pressure on the qb.The secondary & the DL are dependent on each other to make thier job's easier, right now, they're not helping each other much.Of course, they might then try & overload a guy's zone.Football's a complicated game, one that's alway's changing. The team that's alway's one step ahead usually ends up the winner.

Well I'm going to go against the grain here and start with something positive. The traffic signal getting off I-29 at Exit 132. That was long overdue and makes that intersection about a million times safer.

So onto the game we go.

Matt Hylland should never see a snap again in college. I know several things mount to this loss, but those two drops were at the top of the list. A D-1 football player can't drop that first ball...ever.

They seemed to get positive yards on every single play.

It took 7+ quarters to score a TD this year. Are you kidding me?

The only decent running plays seemed to come out of the wildcat. And that's the formation the other team knows they're running out of.

Why is TOB throwing 4 yards on 3rd and 8? Because he's scared sh!tless he's not going to have a pocket to throw out of by the time his guys get 8 yards down the field.

I don't have an answer why the d-backs are playing 8 yards off the receivers.

The lady who told me to settle down when I was standing and yelling on 3rd down. Get used to it or it's going to be a long three years until the next seat reallottment.

The way to right the ship. They need to get control of both lines of scrimmage. They are getting handled. And by a team that was giving up 40 ppg.

Re: Illinois State Game Day Thread

I have not posted much recently and have chose to just lurk the board cause there are many here with much more knowledge of SDSU athletics than I have. But after last night, I have to say a few things. I am not very optimitic about this years team. I know we are only two games into the season, but I have not seen or heard much to make me feel very good about them. It was a very disappointing evening, from the pregame (terrible) to the band and then the game. I am not a SDSU hater and have supported State for nearly 40 years. I bleed yellow and blue. I try to look for the positive, but just cannot see much right now. It was too bad that last night, with all the seniors visiting and a good crowd, we could not put a better product on the field. How can we at this point after the transition have the lack of depth we have. We have the full compliment fo scholllies don't we? I was really looking forward to next weeks game in Lincoln, but now don't know if I even want to go. Sorry for the lack of positive thoughts and I hope I am wrong on all points. Looks like the paly needs to opened up to the pages that look downfield and not just a five yard game. Play calling last night was weak. Cant' blame TOB for the patterns he is given to throw to. Don't give him the opportunity to throw a 4 yard pass on third and 8. I know I will get beaten up by this post, but I can take it and will always love the yellow and blue.

Re: Illinois State Game Day Thread

Here is my take on the game yesterday from section G. From the introductions thru the 3rd quarter there seemed to be no energy. From the contrived "if you don't cheer Jack Rabbit isn't going to show up" to an almost mellow sounding intro video the game never really got going. It just didnt FEEL like a jackrabbit game to me.

Then once the offense decided that they wanted to feature Priddy the entire first half, it took any remaining excitement out if the crowd.

As far as the on field goes, there doesnt seem to be the intensify on the defensive side of the ball. Perhaps this can be attributed to the fact that our D-line got zero pressure all game long. And, perhaps instead of spending money on a new stadium, we shoul all donate to buying new tackling dummies.

The offense is lost, and looked completly confused on a number if plays. There really wasn't anything to get excited about on that side of the ball.

I hope we catch lightning in a bottle next week, but me thinks it is going to be a mega mauling. If u think Illinois State's o-line blew us off the ball, just wait til' we face the vaunted Nebraska running game, which is starting to look more and more like the old days. This one will be over by the end of the first quarter.

Let's take our beating, grab our paycheck, and get ready for conference ball. No time to jump off the cliff at 0-1 in the conference.

I like your idea of putting Kool in the backfield some Look how many sweeps they ran on us last night out of their shotgun formation. They would crack back on the outside and it simply worked. Same thing Delaware did to us. Minnett has been a very good back for us but is not shifty and is more of your straight ahead runner etc. We simply don't have the stud O Linemen like we had last yr. to get it done inside this yr. Last week at Delaware-4th and 1-handoff to Minnett-STUFFED Last night from the 1.5 yard line going for 2 Handoff to Minnett STUFFED Kool IMO is a better running back than WR He can obviously play both but could be used back there also.

Re: Illinois State Game Day Thread

I wasn't stunned by last evenings result. From pre-game to final horn we saw a program acting like its still in transition. Inconsistency, confusion, lack of direction or even the appearance of planning. I don't think we have an identified leader for the gameday program or for the team on the field. I think we have some great candidates but nobody seems to want to step up. I could see this coming after the Montana loss and knowing the players we lost to graduation.

So, what does that mean? I'm certainly not less of a fan. I am much less excited about the football season though. What's going to happen next week in Lincoln? I think the writing is on the wall.

We know we don't have as good a team as UD or Ill. St. We know our receiving core is suspect at best and unlikely to suddenly get better. We know that Minnet is having trouble finding any holes. We know that our defense doesn't tackle well. We know that our lines are not likely to dominate any FCS level teams. We know that our FG kicker isn't accurate and that our coaches don't seem to recognize that.

So, I guess this is where a head coach really earns his take. Stig has to figure out a way to be competitive with a team that has less strengths than the last few years. Capitalize on your best players and find a way to give SDSU a chance to win, on the field, every Saturday. That obviously started right after the game last week and needs to continue until it gets figured out.

I don't cheer for a team only when their winning. That isn't what a fan is about. Now, I definitely cheer a lot louder when we are winning and hope that happens but I'm not counting on it. We are clearly the underdog in all or our road games this year. At home I don't think we are any better than an even shake to win. So, the fans need to be one of the factors that carries us to some victories. Build some confidence, find an identity and this team can surprise some people.

I waited until 2:00 p.m. today (Sunday) to dare to read this thread. Overall, a fairly reserved response to what was mostly an awful day on the field.

Agreed...lincoln go for thegood time...No one gives us a chance against the huskers..and no one will...but we show up! We as fans...(and the media) have blown this game up to something it really shouldn't be. SO we show and we support our team. Then move back into conference play. Once again in the Cedar Falls paper UNI is beating themselves again so we can go down their and help them do that still...then we are 1-1 in the conference...nothing wrong with that! We've started 0-2 and 0-3 before, that's not the entire season!

Blaming the O - Line for TOB's happy feet, inaccuracy, and locking on to one receiver is crazy. For the most part, he had time last night. To say otherwise shows football ignorance. Sure they gave up a couple of sacks but they were on obvious passing downs. Secondly, when the Jacks went Wildcat, obvious run, the O-line had holes for Minett to run. Do you blame the O-line for Minett having over 100 yards rushing? If we as fans know when we will run, what do you think the opposing coaches think? In TOB's defense, there were a lot of dropped balls. But to his detriment, a lot of passes were not even close until he warmed up in the 4th quarter.

Obviously losing Danny Batten and Chris Johnson hurts. The Jacks seem to lack size up front. Speed like crazy, but they need some beef. Good thing they have some with the red shirts. Totally agree with why are the D-backs playing off. The worse is when they had Winston in the game and he gave up a critical third down right in front of him. Domino needs to step up and start earning his accolades also. Saw good stuff from Steffens.

The crowd noise is always a frustration. Why does the crowd not know to make some noise when the other team has the ball on critical third downs? I can't figure that one out. They figure that out in Fargo, why can't they in Brookings?

And why is no one criticizing Stig for his clock management?

You can't take your timeouts with you. The Jacks were down by 10 with momentum on their side in the 4th quarter. There was about 3:40 left on the clock or slightly less on third down. Jacks had two timeouts left. Did not call one. Jacks hold and force 4th and 6.

WHY DID STIG NOT CALL TIME OUT ON 4th DOWN?

By the time the Jacks got the ball back, there was about a minute and a half left. Clock stops on first down in College football.

I'd like to hear Stig's excuse for the clock management.
