2. He has a major league fastball and solid secondary pitches, I think if he is to stay a starter he would have to develop the #2 and #3 pitches more
3. He is 24 already, I know Jamie Moyer is 49 but generally with college players and older ones like he is, they tend to try to push them more then the high school or young college players
4. Also the 1 game of his I watched in person, (NDSU during conference tournament), and yes it did cool down quite a bit during that game, but his velocity dropped 5-6 mph's if not more by the time he was relieved.
I'm not saying he can't be a major league starter, I just think he could move up faster, and has a better chance at it by being a reliever.

Re: Blake Treinen
I did some research on Treinen and found a lot of articles on him @ the Oakland clubhouse web site!
1) Gil Patterson the Oakland A's Minor league pitching coordinator was interviewed and asked if Treinen would be looked at as a starter? He stated Treinen has a hard, hard sinker and a plus slider! If we don't use him as a starter they should fire me! (Article dated 8/16/11)
2) David Frost Assistant GM, Stated Treinen has a wipe-out slider (Article dated 8/24/11)
3) Eric Kubota Head scout for the A's stated Treinen has a plus fastball and a plus slider. (Article dated 6/22/11)
There are more articles but basically they are going to give Blake every opportunity to be a starter and if he does not show progression then they would move him to the reliever roll. They also stated that age was not a factor (Blake turns 24 in Jun) since he only pitched 2 years in college and they believe there is a lot more left in his arm. They believe he has 2 plus pitches (slider & sinking fastball) and is developing his change up. I was also at last years conference tournament game, not once did I see his fastball drop below 92. His slider and change up was the only thing below that speed so of course it would drop off 5-6 mph's or more. Once again I found all of my articles at the Oakland clubhouse website where the did interviews with the upper management.

As far as the conference tournament, he was clocking 96-97 when I got there. I thought he had a few in the high 80's his last inning, maybe not, I was more concerned/focused on the shorties that were sitting by me.

Re: Blake Treinen
Blake had had a couple rough starts in a row until last night's start. Last night he threw 6 allowing 1 run on 4 hits. On the season so far he is 3-4 with a 4.14 ERA 40 strike outs in 50 IP. Overall a pretty good start to the season especially considering the California League has always been known to be a very hitter friendly league.

Re: Blake Treinen
Given his actual pitching years, despite his age, he is still just a "pup". So continued improvement, even if inconsistent, bodes well for the chances he will have in the future to move up. Learning to do more than pitch a 96 mph fastball, is the key for him. If he gets that, his natural arm for speed could provide that outcome. GO BLAKE!!!Last edited by Jacks#1Fan; 06-18-2012, 02:23 PM.
