The Mastodons got it up to 81-67 when, with 2:22 remaining, Oral Roberts’ Jaci Bigham – one of the four freshmen – went down on the baseline near the ORU bench.
That’s when Finkbeiner came onto the floor, his elbows out and swinging to illustrate an IPFW foul. And as he was headed back to his bench, he saw the unattended basketball and punted it into the stands.
“I think there was a little bit of bad blood here because we’ve beaten Oral Roberts three times in a row,” IPFW coach Chris Paul said. “They were 10-2, and one of their losses was to us on their floor, so I think they were out to avenge that, so we knew we were going to face that. But our kids came out focused; they came out to prove a point.”
