  • Classy Act by ORU Women's Coach Finkbeiner

Terry posted a link to this article in his blog here but I wanted to pass it along to everyone else too. Below is a portion of the article from the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette after IPFW beat ORU last Monday for the 2nd time this year.

    ....

The Mastodons got it up to 81-67 when, with 2:22 remaining, Oral Roberts’ Jaci Bigham – one of the four freshmen – went down on the baseline near the ORU bench.

That’s when Finkbeiner came onto the floor, his elbows out and swinging to illustrate an IPFW foul. And as he was headed back to his bench, he saw the unattended basketball and punted it into the stands.

“I think there was a little bit of bad blood here because we’ve beaten Oral Roberts three times in a row,” IPFW coach Chris Paul said. “They were 10-2, and one of their losses was to us on their floor, so I think they were out to avenge that, so we knew we were going to face that. But our kids came out focused; they came out to prove a point.”

In ORU's defense. In their minds they are never supposed to lose. All those years of hosting the conference tourny and getting the auto bids really jaded them I believe. And now that they are getting challenged by a good majority of the teams in the Summit, you can really see the frustration with the fans.

And this is supposed to justify actions like this? I think not!

This is the exact reason no one in the league likes ORU, men or women.

ORU did get a technical foul called on them at least. There were 166 people at the game.

Oral Roberts himself was surely rolling in his grave. When in doubt - "what would Jesus do?" Punt the ball into the stands. Classy....

Hate to bring JC into it, but really?

My bad. I assumed that the sarcasm would be assumed since this kind of action is not okay. I shall make sure I turn it on next time.

166 is HORRIBLE for a game between the league leader, and a team that is right in the mix. Summit has to be happy with the attendence that the two Dakota schools are bringing to their marque sports events.

When a team wins, do it with class & respect for your opponent, like wise when you lose.In the long run, that's what the University will be remembered for.

That's my assertion in ALL sports, by all teams. The team's character says something about the coach's character. That is something SDSU can be proud of - the character of our coaches. Not sure it has always been the case, but going down the line - I can't think of better examples for our student athletes.

To the contrary - several schools that came through CAS this season and lost didn't show the character I hope to see from our young men & women.

I wouldn't have any problem with the Summit sitting him out for a game. That is pretty ridiculous. I thought the league would have taken action on AJ when he grabbed the ref's arm during the ORU game up here during the whole did-they-take-it-out-of-bounds situation. I think this goes a little beyond that, although physical contact is often a dividing line so if AJ didn't get anything, Finkbeiner probably won't either.

You can't teach an old dog new tricks, but you can never teach a stupid dog anything.

Perhaps, fairly or not, a coach's history of such actions may weigh heavily on their decisions.

I think it is fair to consider that. And I guess I should say that I have not heard of any action taken by the League. I also do not know if Finkbeiner has a history of these type of actions.

So you are saying there is a better than average chance he didn't hit anyone?

                            Thank goodness.
