In college you have 4 years of eligibility and you can also use one more year as a redshirt year.
Axtell played as a true freshman at Texas. Had he transfered outside the Big XII he would have had to sit out a year. He could have used his redshirt year as that year, meaning he would have been a redshirt sophmore with three years eligibility left. Because he transfered in-conference to KU, he was a Junior w/ two years left.
Had he transfered outside of the Big XII:
97-98 Texas
98-99 REDSHIRT/TRANSFER
99-00 eligible
00-01 eligible
01-02 eligible
Because he transfered to Kansas, in the Big XII:
97-98 Texas
98-99 TRANSFER
00-01 Kansas
01-02 Kansas
