I'll buy everyone a round if Ryan Miller coaches at USD. I just cant see him wanting to go to Vermillion SD. I think he is looking for bigger and better things. But i could be wrong. And if he ends up there, give him a couple years and he'll be gone to bigger and better things.

This is pure speculation on my part, but seems I recall during the dark days of Coach Nagy, and those were dark, dark days, that Ryan Miller's name came up in a Stu blog or column as interested in HC at SDSU. Things turned around for both Coach Nagy and Ryan Miller in that he went from New Mexico to Auburn and until the HC got fired, he had a job that he no longer has. I tend to think you are right about the ambitions of Ryan Miller. He has seen the bright lights and might not be interested in any job in the Dakotas.

We may not like what Stu has to say, but it might not be a good idea to poo-pooh his sources of off the record news. I am sure he knows people who are close to RM in your very own city of Mitchell.

Miller worked for Coach Tony Barbee, who recently was fired at Auburn after a bad run that reportedly left the program in tough shape. Not much promotion potential or career value there. It wouldn't surprise me if Miller would be interested in an opportunity to be the head coach of a D-1 program in his home state. It could help restart his once promising career.

Right, I'm not sure what, if any, options he has for a head coaching position at the DI level at this time. Not sure USD should even be interested. Don't know enough about why he did not move on with Alford from N Mexico to UCLA. Maybe he thought the Missouri opportunity was a better one. Maybe he didn't want to go to California. Here is a snippet from his resume:

College - Second year as associate head coach at Auburn (2012-pres.); Two months as an assistant coach at Missouri (2012); Five years as an assistant coach at New Mexico (2007-12); One year as an assistant coach at Pepperdine (2006-07); Three years as basketball operations assistant at Memphis (2004-07).

Re: Joey James Out as USD Head Coach

From what I have heard around Vermillion, It sounds like either an assistant at Iowa State or an assistant with Miles in Nebraska were getting all the attention.

He left Alford's team a year before Alford went to UCLA didn't he?

I think you are referring to Craig Smith, Miles right hand man. Would he leave the comforts of a well paid assistant to take a head job for maybe less money? http://www.huskers.com/ViewArticle.d...CLID=205435851

I think you are right. Sorry for any confusion. I think he had what appeared to be the right opportunity at Missouri.

He does make $200k to be an assistant coach, not bad money.

Not sure what the Yotes paid Boots or James...Could they pay $200-250k?

                              James made $90,000 this year.

                              Boots made $126,800.

Not likely they can essentially double the HC's salary.

That's all Folks, so ends the Looney Tunes Cartoon and USD ambitions of attracting Craig Smith.
