    Per Argus Leader:
"James was a longtime assistant coach who took over as interim head coach in September of 2013 when Dave Boots retired after 25 seasons. James, a former Coyote player, was told Monday afternoon by USD athletic director David Herbster that he would not be getting the job permanently."

It appears there was a meeting.

In other news, USD Volleyball coach, Matt Houck resigned today to take an associate head coach job at UM-TC.

Not true based on later post, but even worse if that was the case. Arguably the most high profile coach in the department finds out through office gossip that he lost his job?!?

You are reaching now to save face for the department. Just agree that it wasn't a great move by Herbster.

It will be interesting to see if USD finds a spot for assistant coach Lloyd Williams , who happens to be married to some gal named Amy.

I don't think it's any surprise that Joey James got fired. Dave Boots basically forced the AD into giving James the interim gig by holding off on announcing his resignation until it was too late to do a search. That was bound to miff the AD and president, who naturally would want a say in who holds the position. It's a D-1 job. Even USD should be able to attract a pretty good candidate. My bet is they get someone with regional history and name recognition. And I'm guessing that keeping Lloyd Williams on staff will be a job requirement.

Joey shouldn't have posted something like this on Twitter. Just let it go, and move on. Stay professional, don't burn any bridges. You never know what future employers are going to think of a tweet like this.

If anything, he should be pissed at Boots for putting him, Abbott, and Herbster in this position. Joey was behind the 8 ball from the beginning.

              Good luck to him.

I'm not sure why he should be pissed at Boots. If not for his late exit, James could very well have been unemployed this past season.Instead, he was paid to audition for a D1 head coaching position. Nobody knows if that opportunity would have ever presented itself otherwise.

Re: Joey James Out as USD Head Coach

Does this national search and the hiring a consultant firm bar Joey from re-applying? Just to spite everyone, he should apply. I can imagine, his application would quickly hit circular file. Nothing like trying. A lot thanks you get for being a loyal assistant for all these years. I wonder if the carrot top guy from IPFW will get treated in this manner. I hope not.

I totally agree with that, which is exactly why I didn't understand why he took to Twitter. He shouldn't be mad about having a year to be the head coach at a D1 school, even if he wasn't given the job permanently. I thought more of a "Thank you, looking forward to the next challenge" tweet would have been more appropriate if he felt the need to tweet.

I think it is easy to comment back and forth on what might prove to be bad judgement on Joey's part. This has been a rough year for Joey. I think he mentioned more than once about sleepless nights and no doubt there have been those. I wonder if the HERBSTER should not have been more honest in telling him that he should expect a national search at season end. I get the feeling that the HERBSTER led him on in thinking he still might be a permanent candidate for the coach.

The USD Volley ball coach announced he was leaving too, and you wonder what is going on there. Seems like this guy had SDSU number and was doing a good job. Does the HERBSTER think he can find a better coach for volleyball too? MR. Interim AD had better watch his step.

Believe I read the USD volleyball coach is leaving to be the assistant coach at the University of Minnesota. Not sure if people in the volleyball world would consider that a step up, a step sideways, or a step back, but it's not exactly like he left to pursue a career in insurance sales or something. My point being I'm not sure if that situation is necessarily a result of Herbster being unqualified/unable to steer the ship.

Maybe I am being hard on the Herbster. Hindsight tells me the James situation was not handle right

A move from USD volleyball to Big 10 volleyball is definitely NOT a step sideway. The Big 10 VB is tops in the land without question. It sounds like deja'vu to me - our first year of eligibility, Pailieo took us to the NCAA tourney and left for Washington State. I don't think that ended the way he would have liked.

The difference being Palileo went to Washington State to be a head coach. The USD head coach went to U of M to be an assistant head coach I believe.

Probably still a step up though.

Oh, I don't care at all if you are/aren't hard on Herbster. I was just pointing out what I had recently read about the volleyball coach just to clarify a little bit. It will be interesting to see what Herbster does moving forward from here.
