  • Joey James Out as USD Head Coach

@ElsenMidcoSN: "BREAKING: Joey James will not return as South Dakota's head coach. The Coyotes went 12-18 overall & 6-8 in The Summit League this season."

@coachjjames: "Loyalty and commitment-what does that mean these days?"

Interesting move. Not sure who USD thinks will come be their head coach. I thought James did okay with what talent he had.

I think USD just made a mistake. Apparently they have someone who can do better. Jackmd had it right.

I think James was dealt a bad hand and did pretty good considering. Their best record to date in conference with an undersized team in a pretty tough league.

I suppose with a new arena coming soon they want to make a splash and re-invigorate the fan base.

      We shall see...

Pretty much my thoughts as well. Joey is a good guy who has spent his entire playing and coaching career at USD. Can't imagine that he feels great about the decision.

I watched the press conference after our game down there and he was asked his thoughts on the "interim" tag. From his response I think he knew this was coming.

I did a google search and so far there are no press releases confirming this, but that does not mean there will soon be releases all over the internet. Its kind of interesting, that USD makes the big announcement during the tourney about shoveling dirt, and also they received one or two large contributions. Do you suppose those contributions had conditions? Like hire a new coach? Just supposing.....

Any chance at all that this would be a job Tibbetts would want?

I cannot see this happening. Being the head coach at USD will be very attractive to a number of candidates, but my guess is that being a NBA coach or potential NBA head coach is more attractive to Coach Tibbetts.

Pretty ridiculous that USD let this news break today...says a lot about the leadership in their department if you ask me. Today should be completely positive and all about their WBB program. It's arguably one of the most momentous days in their WBB history and in their athletic department as a whole. To take attention away from that to deal with the MBB firing is crazy. I can't see any reason why waiting until later this week would have made any difference in the progression of their search. Crazy.

This is Jim Abbott's decision to make, and if those donors did not get to him someone else sure did. I personally like Joey. He got away from the Boots Defense that worked great at Augsburg and the NCC, but now its a different world, and James had the insight to recognize that.

Joey James is the one that leaked the information via a late night tweet. He had an interim tag.

I understand that. But if you are Herbster and don't want that to happen, then delay talking with James about it until tomorrow. No excuse.

Who said the two of them had a meeting concerning James' coaching status? Isn't it quite possible that internal discussions within the department somehow found their way to James and he decided on his own to vent via a late night tweet?

In other news, USD Volleyball coach, Matt Houck resigned today to take an associate head coach job at UM-TC.

If that's the case, James shouldn't be the only one looking for a new position.
