One advantage of one year contracts. Make it clear to James or whoever that they will open up the position next off season.

Yeah, but that doesn't really matter, if there was 5 year contracts he'd only get a 1 year contract, it hurts recruiting and the A.D.'s office, because to keep recruiting and things on pace, you want a coach who is expected to be there, but how he got the job (assuming he gets it). Will make people question if he will get the head job after this year.

        Re: Dave Boots retires

The only guy that knows the full story is Boots himself. The timing is curious to say the least. I'm sad to see him retire now.

Remember how brutal the transition was for the Jacks from D2 to D1 in MBB? It flat-out sucked! There were a lot of people calling for Nagy's head in those years. Cooler heads prevailed thank goodness. Recruiting is brutal in transition. Who wants to go play for a team that doesn't have the opportunity to go anywhere if you have success. Getting games is tough and the road schedule is awful. USD is through transition, have a new arena being built, recruiting should pick up, and they don't have to bad of a team. His son just got done playing for him, he's put in 25 years, and maybe he just wants to retire. Nothing wrong with that. I wish him the best.

This will be an attractive situation for many people. Vermillion in the fall is really...em...er. They will get a lot of quality applicants.

That all being said, of course I hope we give them two or three whoopins this year!

I've gotta think he did this out of loyalty to Coach James. Give him a shot.

As mentioned in previous post by SUPERBUNNY, they have some good young talent, are building a new BB facility, this way he ensures his loyal assistant gets a shot.

As also mentioned, new AD...probably would have looked for someone new.

Always respected Boots as a coach, and I've never heard a sniff of impropriety around him or his program. This was him being loyal to his coaching staff, and doing what he thinks is best. You may not agree with it, but it's his decision to make.

            Re: Dave Boots retires

Mike & Mike interviewed Boots today on their Calling All Sports radio show. There was no mention of Joey James in any of the questions or in any of the answers to other questions. That seemed kind of strange, given all the speculation about Boots trying to position James for the head job. Boots just said he was burned out on coaching, couldn't get recharged and would support whatever the AD chose to do. Considering that USD has had a losing record in its first two years in the Summit, I'm beginning to think the AD will want to go outside the present coaching crew for a permanent coach.

Have you called them to pitch the idea of a mike and mike and mike in the morning show?

Good job Mike and Mark on the interview. It,s clear to me that Dave did not want to go another season, because he did not feel he had the fire in the belly to take is program up a notch. I never have seen Dave Boots as a manipulator and Joey is pretty much on his own in getting the HC job. Its not unusal for coaches to have long conversations with the AD, as occurred in this case.

The interview served a purpose and as far as I concerned I wish Dave Boots a pleasant retirement. I will always be gratiful to Dave for holding the door at Comfort Inn during a tourney at SDSU that included USD about 2002 or thereabouts. I had my hands full and he seen me coming in my SDSU parka and held the door for me. A real class act in my opinion. He did not have to do that.

Oops. Sorry. Mark and Mike, not Mike and Mike. Thanks for posting the link.

I didn't hear the interview (may look it up later today) but my first thought upon hearing the news is that maybe Boots just arrived at work one day as school was starting, and suddenly realized (or maybe finally realized) "I really can't--or don't want to--do this any more."

Could be as simple as that. It happens.

                        No conspiracy theories required.
