I laugh, as it seemed that Denver has became the new spring break getaway for many, quite a few of my friends who are still in college were telling me of their plans to go to Denver for spring break.

There basketball team was kinda in the gutter and has gone upwards in the past 5 years. They use to have a fair amount of their games (both men's and women's) on FSN Rocky Mountain (now Root Sports), and they really like their men's basketball coach Joe Scott. Seems like a guy you would want to play for, would show up to Rockies games and be interviewed, be pictured at Nuggets games, etc. Puts his face out there so to say. They won 22 games last year. Its not like they are USD or UNO. (no offense meant to those schools).

As far as the budget, I've read some places, and I've yet to see it confirmed, but I did read a similar thing about Notre Dame, that private schools put their scholarship money as part of their athletic budget, where public schools do not. IDK if that is true, but if it is, it would take a fair amount off the top, as its not cheep to attend Denver.

I'm wondering if the selections for the post-game meal will include Sour Cream and Onion chips and Pop Tarts?

I wonder if this would be their school song...

Judging from the DU fan comments, it appears we have found a worthy replacement for ORU in the "whose fans are the most arrogant and uninformed" category.

Those are large numbers when you look at IUPUI, IPFW, Western etc that if counting all the ticket takers, security, concessions you MAY get to 200. So, the attendace for WBB is no surprise to me. I remember days at N. Colorado, Neb Omaha when Jacks fans out numbered their home fans at WBB games. Lets just keep showing up and supporting our women.

I for one is very pleased to have Denver come aboard. In these times of musical chairs in conference affiliation its nice to be on the add side vs the delete side. With Oakland a possible loss it was important that we add Denver. I must say they kept this extremely quite as I never heard any rumors for this happening.

Welcome Denver. Nothing wrong with a road trip to Denver and munchies all the way home!

An interesting detail from the press release is that Denver had a site visit.

                  Two interesting things about that:

The Summit League felt a site visit was necessary for a Phi Beta Kappa school that has won the I-AAA Director's cup.

Nary a word leaked out about that site visit.

I second this. Not even in the conference a day and they think that its beneath them. I don't see how they thought they could get an MVC invite. I know the Summit is not the most sexy conference out there, but we have vastly improved in recent years. I would beg to differ as this is a step down for them in terms of moving from the Sun Belt. It is a lateral move at worst, and I believe it to be a step up, in terms of basketball which is what will be their biggest sport here.

I know it is not what they expected in moving to the WAC, but the writing was on the wall in that conference was already in a downward spiral. It was a lesser version of the Big East. The WAC, like the Big East, gets picked apart by other conferences which in turn picks up schools a step below them until it was a shell of its former self. That is not what they signed up for. They thought they made it "big-time" but everything crumbled around them.

Now is the Summit their best fit. Probably not, but for now it is. If they can get into the WCC, good for them and probably a better fit. I highly doubt they get an invite from the Big Sky, but might be possible down the road with further conference realignments trickling down to the MVFC and Summit levels. If they would take a step back, they would see that this is a pretty good place to be. The conference has solidified down the I-29 corridor giving it a good back bone. Only way I see this changing if something happens in the MVC and SDSU and NDSU get invites to that league. Sorry DU fans, we are just fit in their footprint better.

IDK, I guess if I was in the DU fan's shoes I'd be upset as well. They thought the WAC was going to be the answer to all of there problems and they didn't even stay a year in the conference and the move is not a move up (at least in their eyes). Some of that is on the school who made a big deal out of going to the WAC, and lets be honest every fan base has a few of these fans. Most Denver fans I know are pretty realistic on their school. I went to college with a bunch of Colorado folks and they felt the Denver basketball programs were similar to a SDSU.

                        Re: Denver to Summit?

going to start this with I am glad to see DU in the Summit. I don't know much about them (will have to do some research in the next year ), but they reasonably fit the footprint and are a much needed stableizer, I don't think the last shoe has dropped regarding Oakland and the Horizon, but that is just a gut feeling, So I am glad to have another school in the league. I agree with other posters that I would like to see UND/UNC. That happens the Summit is going to be pretty strong and stable for years to come. I would say, comparable to the Horizon and MVC within about 10-15 years once everyone updates their facilities, etc.

Then there is the part of me that is so over arrogant fans from other schools that I just want to start bitch slapping.

With all the conference realignment, I hope the powers that be take a hard look at the state of the MVC prior to moving. I could realistically see them being raided by the Big East or others with recent talk of UNI (and one Illinois maybe?) wanting to move up to FBS. Who knows, when this all shakes out, the Summit could be a much better and more stable home as crazy as it sounds. The last thing we want is a Denver-WAC-like celebration for making the big time of the MVC only to find out minutes later the conference is falling apart.

One thing that is interesting as I heard news of Louisville moving out of the Big East today, it is surprising that conference buyouts are a flat rate ($10 mil for them) instead of a percentage of athletic budget or some other metric that makes it hurt a little more to move. When the music stops, the Big East will likely have little more sway than the MVC in the grand scheme of things.

                              Re: Denver to Summit?

I totally agree. I am actually in the camp of preferring to stay in the Summit and making this conference ours with the other Dakota schools. I would not be opposed to moving the the MVC as long as it is a clear step up, but I see us being looked down on by the non-football MVC teams. I just believe we fit better in the Summit with what we have now. That would be more solidified if the Summit added UND down the road. It re-establishes rivalries which I believe will make the conference more stable. Right now the Summit is seen as a stepping stone conference. We need to get teams in the Summit that want to be here and not just use it as a place to bide their time until something better opens up. Right now, Denver doesn't appear to fit that and that is fine for now. How do we get there? I'm not sure as our footprint is not in the most attractive positions were we can really go out and get those schools that would fit. It starts with elevating league status and that starts with basketball.

                                Re: Denver to Summit?

I have a couple of questions. If they have already been answered, I missed it.

The first question is, did Denver University have to agree to a minimum number of years in the Summit League vs. a specified dollar amount as a buy out to leave early?

The second questions is, with at least two conference members using arenas that share their schedules between both basketball and hockey, will scheduling conflicts make the mirror scheduling used by mens and womens basketball more difficult to accomplish? UNO men's basketball shares Ralston Arena with the Omaha Lancers of the USHL. (UNO women's basketball is played in the Sapp Fieldhouse.) Denver University uses Magness Arena for both its mens and womens basketball games as well as for its hockey team.
