Just to clarify, I wasn't saying that one of the xDSU's wouldn't make the move by themselves if given the opportunity, I just find it doubtful that a conference would offer 1 without the other due to geography.

In terms of finances, we have the ability to make the move to MVC should the opportunity present itself.

Of course we would start out at the bottom of the totem pole in terms of funding when coming into the conference, that's generally part of the deal when you upgrade your conference. And for all the add expenses to be competitive in the conference, there are also revenue streams that aren't available to us currently in the Summit. The Missouri Valley has a television deal, larger attendance at their conference tournament, and a higher probability of getting multiple teams into the NCAA tournament, all of which would increase SDSU's revenue if they were a part of it. Not to mention that Northern Iowa, Drake, and Creighton coming to Brookings would be incredibly attractive opponents for fans and would be close enough we could get visiting fans from them as well.

Much like when we made the jump to Division I, moving to a better conference is a process. We aren't going to walk into the league on an equal budget to most, if any of the teams, but that doesn't mean we can't or won't get there either. We've been blessed with some good administrators running our athletic department and I have faith they'll get the job done with the time comes.
If you think nobody cares about you, try missing a couple of payments.

Aren't we getting just a tad ahead of events here? Butler at last report was still in the Horizon . . . for now, anyway . . .

Oakland or anyone else hasn't left the Summit, yet.

The Valley hasn't lost Evansville, yet.

Yeah, dang near anything can happen.

But I think we're getting an idea of "who's panicking," aren't we?

It's never too early to panic.

I'm not panicking, but I am consciously aware that there may be serious issues ahead. Be prepared, know your options, have contingency plans drawn up. We have the right person in place in Sell, to come out of any potential conference shuffles in as good if not better position than we are now.

I would bet Sell has talked to Horizon, MVC, and Big Sky this week already.

I agree. Looking at Evansville, their men bb program finished 16-16, this year and got taken out by Princeton in CBI. Right now they seem very average and SDSU most likely would have beaten Evansville this year. Back in the D2 days they were tough, and they seem to have a great deal of support. The entire town of Evansville is behind them, even though they are afflilated with the United Methodist Church. If Augie or USF could get the entire community behind them, they might too be D1. I wonder why they would want to leave the MVC to go to the Horizon.

I'm guessing money...... actually that is most definitely it. because that is what drives these type of decisions. My guess is they feel that travel would be cheaper, and they wouldn't have to pump as much $ to be competitive or if they pump that type of $ they will see the benefit which they didn't in the MVC because they were underfunded in the MVC.

                  Re: Who's panicking?

Lets look at this another way. Say Oakland or the Indiana Initial Schools go to the Horizon. Whom does the Summit look to bring in from another conference. Summit was 16/17 in RPI meaning there are 15 other conferences that would look to the summit for a step up. who is in the footprint that would be a good fit?

It's possible the Summit would opt to stay at 8 members if Oakland departs.

                      Re: Who's panicking?

Any more rumblings about a Minnesota school joining? I heard it a couple of years ago, and then it quieted down, but I'd heard similar rumors over the past 3-4 months. Told it was 50-50 one of the Minnesota would drop football, go D-I, join the Summit. Not saying that this is what I would want or it is going to happen, but if it was going to happen you would expect the decision to be made in the next couple of weeks.

The Summit would add a DII school or an Indy. With Oakland and ORU gone nobody from a current conference will be lining up to join the Summit.

UALR. And NDSU & SDSU are in no small part responsible for two of the unattractive aspects of the Summit: Travel and comparatively weak basketball programs.

Why would UALR leave the Sun Belt?

For the same reason Denver is leaving. The Sun Belt said that all schools have to participate in all of their core sports, football being one of the core sports. So if you don't have football, they will kick you out. I am sure that UALR has options, but I believe the Summit League is one possibility.

Where is Denver headed? Summit? That would be interesting.
