Re: Big Sky looking at USD
My perspective, the thing I miss most about the old DII days is the NCC. You could pretty much make it to every conference game, home and away, with minimal travel plans. It was great and I miss that. Old rivalries still exist and we are in the process of forming new ones. I don't miss any of the DII rivalries.
There are too many things about the move to DI that I like to list them all but the top few include improved level of play, increased focus on facilities and certain program (WBB and FB), the chance to play DI programs from major conferences, and of course the appearances and opportunities to appear in the Big Dance.
So, USD is a fledgling member in a conference that includes 3 of the 4 DI Dakota schools but really no other "NCC close" programs. The said fledgling conference does not sponsor FB and their current FB conference is no longer going to exist. The variables? Will the MVFC expand to include USD? Will the Summit League continue to promote that expansion in support of USD remaining? Will a move to the BSC be worth it financially? What is the future for either conference? Those are some tough issues for a fan to consider much less the people who have to make the decision.
