Both UXD's will face a problem we never had to deal with and that is in-state DI flagships schools that are in established DI conferences. We also brought the Summit up to 10 members and the Gateway to 9, both are considered to be the perfect number of teams for each.

Re: NDSU vs SDSU vs UND vs USD

One factor that needs to be considered as well is that USD and UND are quite a bit further apart geographically than SDSU and NDSU are. What is it about a 3 hour difference in travel.

When it comes to conference affiliation all 4 U's or SU's didn't or don't have alot of choices for conference affiliation. It's pretty much the Summit League or Big Sky for all sports conferences. It seems like the remaining NCC teams didn't seem to have a problem getting into the NSIC (although that isn't a step up) and UNO didn't have much of a problem getting into the MIAA and it didn't appear they really had the room. IMO when it comes to the Summit League if they consider UND and USD good long term additions to their conference they will find away to get them in. If they don't find the schools good additions they will not allow them in. Even if the Summit League was only at 6 schools or if they were at 10 schools. If I were in a conference that was still finding an identity I would want good schools in it period. If you don't think USD and UND are worthy of the Summit than it's all irrelevant anyway. Of course nothing is a given but it's my opinion that within 3 years there is a 50% chance that the U's will be Summit League bound. It's about a 70% chance within the next 7 years. I would think on behalf of the Summit League Commissioner he is going to like that U label that each school brings and the ready made rivalries that would be rekindled in a moments notice. Some of the futher east or further south schools might have the biggest beef. I think the commissioner along with NDSU, SDSU and some of the closer schools will probably be enough to make it happen. I am sure that the Summit League might have taken a small peak at the Sporting News national ranking that had USD #1 in the country. Whether it's true or not (and probably not) but still the kind of thing that looks impressive to a growing conference. Some will say that NDSU and SDSU will vote no as a way to send a message of revenge or superiority to the U's but that also doesn't look good for the reputation of the school either. There could be some neutral people turned off by it. It's in the best interest of SDSU, NDSU, USD and UND if all 4 were in the Summit together.

              Summit League Needs: CORE MEMBERS

None of the Dakota schools help this until 2015 (2019 if a U)

We are two members away from losing the NCAA autobid, but if we don't lose two Core members between now and 2010, we're good.

Always remember the 7/6/5 rule. A conference needs 7 core members, 6 of which must have played together for the previous 5 years to retain its men's basketball autobid. At the moment, the Summit stands at 8 core members with the minimum 6 having played together for 5 years. Cent will hit 5 years next year, and IPFW will start counting in 2012. The xDSU's don't help at all until 2016(you were close, RR) and may not count toward the continuity requirement until 2021(it depends how the NCAA interprets the bylaw). For the UxD's, those numbers are 2020 and 2025. While the UxD's are attractive from a competitive standpoint, men's basketball rules the world(or at least DI). With Cent thinking about DIII, SUU wanting into the Big Sky, and ORU facing a major scandal, core members will be the first considered for any expansion. If the Summit goes to 12 schools, UTPA, Chicago State(again), and even Savannah State would have to come before the UxD's. And who knows what the results of the DI moritorium will be. I doubt they'll loosen the requirements.

Maybe it's just my NDSU bias, but I don't see a very bright future for the UxD's unless/until the xDSU's get into a FBS MVC(my pet idea) and make room in the Summit for our former rivals.

On the topic of the thread, the Bison-Bunny game will always outshine the Doggy-Sue. The distance will continue to be the bigger factor. Isn't UNO closer to USD than UND is? UND will keep relating to Minnesota and Montana(the States, not the U's.), while USD has more in common with Nebraska and Iowa. Just my opinion.

Good Info Hammer. The Summit League knows that the UxD's are not going anywhere. So why invite them and decrease the percentage of revenue each member gets from the NCAA Tourney? The one thing I did learn in our transition is if you can't help a conference, then they really don't need you and you will not get an invite. Good Luck!!!

I struggle with the idea that any, I mean any, legitimate D-I player would want to live in Vermilion. Man I was there once and I guarantee you they will struggle with getting players because of the town. I don't care if Sioux Falls is only 45 min away - you still have to live in Vermilion.

Vermillion with one "L", now that has to be a first time spelling. Rep points earnde.

Vermilllion should be spelled with at least 3 L's. I see a lot of L's in their future.

This is also the difference between us and NDSU as well...

Hammersmith, you are correct. As a matter of fact when the wind is straight out of the North or the South, you can smell Vermillion in Omaha an vice versa.

It isn't a good thing either way!
