  • Re: Stu Strikes Again!

I bought a print copy of Sunday's Argus. Stu wrote short articles about the South Dakotans that are connected to the Olympics such as USD grad Derek Miles in pole vaulting, a grand son of Milt Sorensen who is part of Team USA in baseball and the believe it or not a farmer from Selby SD who is on the Olympic Air pistol team. His name is Brian Beaman, who attended SDSU for awhile. No doubt Coach Stig knows Beaman real well. I thought Stu did a good job and I am not a big Olympic follower but its very interesting to know about various South Dakota people who have connections to the Olympics. Made good Sunday reading, and I believe thats what newspapers are all about.

Interesting choice of words given the nature of the offense.

And me. I think I know, but after the last couple of pages I'm not so sure.

Ask anybody there and they'll tell you Stu is one of the most talented people around. You probably haven't read his news projects. Every now and then, the Argus puts him on a long-term news project and the results win national awards. The guy can report and write.
This is entirely true. I highly suggest people read his book (which he wrote with the late Bob Kourtakis) before crassly dissing Stu's abilities. Remember: It was published around 1990 and dissected the growing steroid problem then. It is comprehensive and intense.

              Stu? That you? Just kidding.

Listen, I haven't changed my opinion but will take a harder look at some of the other pieces he writes and have a more open mind. As far as buying the book, there's a better chance of me being a season ticket holder at the world's largest septic tank in Vermillion. Not going to happen!

Think of it this way: Spending $3 on amazon.com for an excellent book (chock full of Tony Mandarich stuff) is still better and cheaper than a gallon of gas!

                    Stu's book was really good.

The clear distinction here is between Stu the reporter and Stu the opinion columnist. He's as good a reporter as any that I have met or worked with. He's a smart guy and an outstanding writer. If you met him, you'd probably find that he's also very fun to talk to.

On the other hand, most of the people who dislike Stu are annoyed by his opinion pieces. Those are two entirely different kinds of journalism. I think the reactions he gets to his opinion pieces are just further evidence of his ability: He wants to provoke reactions, and he does.

Since Goon asked for a PM and risking the editing by our very fine moderators, the problem the SDSU team encountered in the dressing room involved non use of commodes and human feces in the visiting dressing room. SDSU seems to have witnesses to that fact, but it appears the USD adminstration decided it was good humor and good for the rivalry and did nothing. Correct me if I am wrong, USD never even apologize and did they clean up the mess? Those details I have no knowledge of.

This is the summation of the hearsay. I was not on the bb staff then nor have I ever been so had no purpose in entering the dressing room so can not give a definite confirmation. Others on the board indicate that they can confirm it. This incident never made Stu's columns by the way. Coyote Fan a few posts back was exaggerating that the responible people are now in prison. Coyote fan was having fun with us, but thats okay.

Lets see, I have a blog and I want people to view it. SDSU announces their men's basketball schedule and they have a DII school and NAIA school playing at home. Again, I have a blog that no one from SDSU is intersted in reading unless I can get their attention. Argus runs a blurb on the front page of the sports section which peaks SDSU fans interest. I have more people than ever viewing my blog and paying attention to an opinion that I may or may not really feel that strongly about. The I here is of course Stu.

Of course, in the end, it doesn't really matter what Stu writes in his blog which is exactly the reason I have never visited his blog page.

Well, aside from the subject of the team's dressing rooms, I could sit down with any of you and tell you some absolutely amazing behavior on the part of 1) a high ranking USD official who's profanity and behavior was hard to believe at the last game I ever attended (or will attend) at the dome; 2) the wearing of pornographic t-shirts (unless you don't call one animal being screwed by another pornographic), not just by students -- BUT unbelieveably by student ticket takers (i.e. paid staff); 3) and at a previous game the wearing of tasteless t-shirts in regards to personal difficulties of our AD.

There were plenty of other examples (the USD students that followed me to my car after a game and pounded on our windows as we drove away).

None of this ever made a column, but #2 above elicited a scathing editorial by Craig Steensland, publisher of the Wagner and Lake Andes newspapers, who vowed he would never take his family again to a USD basketball game.

With that, I will "rest in peace" with my position on never playing USD in the dump again!

I am with you 100%, except I wouldn't include "in the dump again", I would replace that with "ever again". Never playing them in anything is too soon...

Here we go again Jacks Fans, USD can do no right and SDSU are the angels in this whole deal. Well all I can say is that if you don't want to give it up with the whole shower thing etc all I can say is this. USD has a few student fans that might have gotten out of hand from time to time. You know the saying about throwing rocks when living in glass houses. At least USD's AD can keep his anger under control. Which really seems worse a few out of control fans or an out of control AD. Just think about it. I guess if the behavior of a few fans not being stopped means it is condoned by the USD administration than it also means that SDSU condones the illegal behavior of it's very own leader of the athletic department. If you want to continue to bash USD you deserve every bit of having things thrown right back at you.

Just look at this board vs the USD board. You don't hear USD fans constantly bringing up the past against SDSU as you hear on this board in reverse. It's sounds to me that SDSU fans have a lot more difficulty moving on from their past rivalries. USD doesn't consider SDSU near the threat that SDSU considers USD. Point proven just by the reaction on this board everytime USD is brought up.
