I've always thought the following was the case: UNC left. NDSU and SDSU announced they were going up the following year. They tried to persuade the conference -- or most of it -- to go up. USD initially supported that position and would have moved up had most of the NCC elected to do so. But the other schools weren't interested. At the time, it seemed to make sense for USD to stay with UND et al. in DII.




And then for several years, some USD fans, finding their heads firmly buried somewhere, made fun of SDSU. There were other USD fans who thought 'oh, oh, we shoulda moved too.'

Close, but not quite 100% accurate. Let's just say our President showed some class at the time and didn't throw some other people under the bus when he could have.
