  • Alvarez wants Big Ten Expansion

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=4735336

So what do you call a twelve team Big Ten?

And if you don't add Notre Dame, who do you add? Pitt?

Unlike Notre Dame, Pitt's academic profile is well inline with the rest of the Big Ten.

Its not like the big east wouldnt have any teams to part with. Im sure there would be a school or two that could be considered.

Notre Dame will stay independent. They make way to much money with their own TV contract. They also draw well when they go to bowl games and do not have to split the $$$ with a confenece. If you eliminate the bowls and go to a true championship playoff system, then it maybe could change.

A few years back Missouri was getting some serious considertion. I don't know if that is still the case.

I would say Rutgers, Syracuse, West Virginia or Louisville. They want to add a new state's media market.

I'm not sure I'd say "serious consideration" other than discussion-board rumors.

My impression of the Big 10 is that they are far too uppity to seriously consider a school that calls itself "Mizzou." (I'm only partially joking there.)

I think it far more likely that the Big 10 is looking east to get deeper into the big east coast media markets rather than west . . . Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Syracuse come to mind immediately.

I believe Notre Dame has a standing invitation to join the Big 10 but that won't happen as long as ND has a separate football TV contract (with NBC).

The Big 10 might be looking at getting into larger east coast markets. IMHO Rutgers isn't the way to go. Not that Rutgers would be a bad fit. I just think that market, the NY metro, will not watch college sports. Too much pro sport product and too little college sport tradition for college to compete.

I think Pitt, WeVa or Syracuse are more likely. I can't see "The Ohio State University" allowing Cincy in. They won't admit that Cincy could ever be on par with "The Ohio State you know the rest."

But then again, the Big 10 might look west and invite The Bison!

There is no way Syracuse leaves the Big East.

Rutgers would be my first preference (gigantic state university that is an academic -- i.e. research and nationally-ranked programs -- match with the Big Ten). But Pitt seems like the most likely. It's in a good media market, creates an obvious rivalry with Penn State. And the program is solid.

Dixon calls the Big East "the best conference in college basketball history" and said it wouldn't benefit Pitt or any other conference member to switch leagues.

Right. Three number one seeds last season and no teams in the championship. Eight teams in the tournament the year before, and no teams in the championship game. Eight teams and two number one seeds in 2006 and, yep, no teams in the championship game.

The Big East was something back in the 80s, but they haven't done much since they bloated up with football schools.

the thing with the Big East is can they lose anybody? they only have 8 football schools

Pitt, Cinci, Rutgers, USF, Syracuse, UConn, West Virgina, and Louisville.....

what about say a Kentucky? decent football, good basketball, geographically in line, wouldn't kill the SEC to lose them.....
