Wow...one of the ESPN guys, during the post-press-conference "analysis", opined that the buyout will be between $15 and $20 million. He added: that won't be a problem since their endowement is worth $5 billion.

Yeah. I'm sure that's exactly what they'll be thinking when they cut him that check.
If I was an alum or donor to Notre Dame I'd think twice about giving more money to the institution. It's one thing to give money to a school to foster educational opportunities. It's an entirely different thing to buyout the contract of fat cats because of stupid decisions made by administrators.

Welcome to D1, South Dakota is not going to be able to sustain the statues that restrict contracts to one year. I forsee buyouts in the future of SDSU athletics but down the road, none soon but maybe later. This always the hazzard with multiyear contracts. The sad part is that they thought Weis could do the job when they hired him.
The movie Rudy gave me the best insight of Notre Dame athletics and their following for football that dates back to Knute Rockne. Years ago a business associate took me to lunch at the Alumni Club which is right by the staduim. We did not have time to see the football staduim, but the lunch was okay and the club was neat and clean, but not extra ordinary different. Just a good place to do lunch.
I wonder is this one billion number for endowments for athletics only or for entire univesity.
At any rate SDSU has some catching up to do.
The prior AD saddled Swarbrick with the huge buyout. Weis was only one-year into the job before they gave him a huge multi-year deal. He was a hot commodity after his first year and there were concerns that the NFL would swoop in and lure Weis away with some big bucks. It turns out that Weis wasn't cut out for the job and now the school has to write him a big check as a result of decisions made by the prior AD.

I hardly knew anything about Wies until the press conference after the ot loss in the prior game, but then I dont follow the NFL that close either.
The early reports are that Brian Kelly will be the new Notre Dame coach. Kelly coached at Grand Valley State and the Jacks whipped them in 1999 (35-20) and 2000 (36-27).

I don't get it....I know coaching is a profession where coaches are always looking to "move up the ladder".
Kelly is going from a secure job, 12-0, #3 ranked, Big East team, to a 6-6, unranked, independent team, where he has no familiarity with the rest of the staff or players.
Other than I suppose monetary reasons, I don't understand how this is a "promotion".
I guess money usually rules the roost.
And Cincy still has to play the Sugar Bowl, seems real classless to leave before the "season" is done.

1.) Kelly sees it as a challenge to turn around probably the most storied FB team in college sports. As with any good college coach they are always looking for challenges, it is in their blood.
2.) He will assemble his own staff, so the non-familiarity with staff will not be an issue.
3.) In about 4 years, the whole team will be "his" players.
4.) The money part doesn't hurt.

We are talking about Norte Dame here, they may have been down the last decade but it is still probably about as high as you can go on the college football coaching ladder.
