VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota athletic department has announced that it will hold a press conference on Tuesday, July 15 at 1:00 p.m., regarding radio partnership. The press conference will be held in room 108 of the Wegner Health Sciences Center at the Sanford School of Medicine in Sioux Falls, S.D. All members of the media and the public are invited to attend Tuesday’s press conference.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From what I heard on the radio today there might be more to it than just radio affiliation. Apparently there might be a change in the football program as well. They might be related, they may not.

Talked with Kevin Culhane a few weeks ago and he said he was not offered the rights to broadcast Udot sports. I don't know the whole story, just sayin' what he said. A station in SF has the new rights. Sounds like Udot is in the process of creating their own sports network. We will have to see what gives...

Football and mens basketball will be originated by B102.7, which is owned by Cumulus Media in Sioux Falls. The play-by-play guy will be Warren Swain, who used to do the University of Nebraska and has had jobs at Drake, Bowling Green, and the University of Ohio since then. He got the job at Ohio last July.

I wonder what Augustana thinks of this since Cumulus Radio in Sioux Falls is also their home and has been all the way back to the days Danny Olsen did their games on KSOO.

Looks like from the FCC site that B102.7 has a primary signal area from Alcester in the south to between Egan and Trent, east to near Canistota, and west to about George, Iowa, and Ellsworth, MN.

I expect affiliates in addition to the flagship station will be forthcoming.

With Warren Swain coming in I will give USD some leaway on the exact stations that will be flagship or affiliates. I feel as if Swain is a big time hire for play by play announcer. Some things are better left alone but this change and hire is a very good one. He will bring credibility to the Yotes. Culhaine was a Coyote homer but I have to think he was a bit in over his head. I remember hearing him from time to time listening to bits of Husker games when I tuned in on rare occassion.

            That's HUGE!

But I can see why USD might go with the B... larger signal and all that. But I never thought the station came into Vermillion or Yankton... Unless Culhane's completely out of the picture.

I kinda doubt Culhane is going to pick up the feed. He was not very pleased the way this came down. I certainly can see why Udot is targeting the SF market and not so concerned about the Vermillion and Yankton market. Heck, most of the residents down here must go to the games anyway to average the numbers they do.

Anybody going to ask: Why would a guy leave so many good jobs? Okay, I'll ask.

I don't know anything about Warren Swain, but, anyone is a step up from Culhane. That dude is (was) horrible.

Culhaine was a loyal Coyote supporter and that is what I will miss the most. What I won't miss is that his dedication seemed to be lacking. He missed several games in the past for personal reasons or whatever other reason may be out there. He seemed to have too much power and didn't really have anyone else to be accountable to, or it would seem. The professionalism was obviously missing and the quality of the broadcast was very subpar. I often times had to listen to the reaction of the crowd to figure out what happened. Sometimes he never did end up explaining what happened. That was really frustrating as a listener. I like Kevin as a person and loyal Coyote fan but not as a play by play guy.

I'll give Udot some credit for trying to make inroads in the Sioux Falls market. But while the B's footprint may be bigger than what they've had before, it still doesn't reach that far. They must be counting on a network or live Internet streaming to make it work.

I also wonder what the loyal B listeners will think of this? There aren't a lot of options left here with the Stampede, Skyforce, Canaries, HS sports, Nebraska and Green Bay football and Augustana all on various stations. It just puzzles me when somebody decides to put live sports on a music intensive station in a market this size. I can't imagine the B's core listeners demanding any kind of sports broadcasts ...

A guy from out of state with no history of the program that will be here for a year or two? At least Culhane knew the players, knew the towns they were from, and cared about the teams. Why not hire a younger guy that can grow with the program?

This just makes me appreciate Steve Imming even more.

I must admit that I am curious to hear what the next move is and just what the "more to it" means. Will half of the home games be played in Brandon or Tea?
