    Re: USD (Coyotes) Go D-I

To go on the record-- a bottle thrown at a player is a bad, bad, dangerous thing.

However, some of the same behavior (although it is lessening as everyone becomes more civilized) does go on in D-1. For the hell of it I googled KU-Mizzou rivalry since I live in Missouri. Of course Missouri started this one off by actually burning the City of Lawrence to the ground-- that IS bad.

    Here's some responses from KUsports.com:

    http://www2.kusports.com/news/2006/n...us_no_1_rival/

Yes, Mizzou is our #1 rival, hands down. Even if the K-State game becomes consistently competitive (with all signs pointing that way currently) Mizzou will remain our biggest rival.

K-State fans don't act like complete jackasses the way that Mizzou fans do. K-State fans don't throw bottles at our band. They don't arrest KU fans for using their 1st amendment right of freedom of speech. Additionally, there are many more divided houses between K-State and KU fans than there are KU and MU fans. KU and K-State like to rib each other but typically will root for each other when not playing one another. I hate Mizzou and everything about them. I relish watching anyone beat them in anything. I hate Missouri. I don't even like driving into their god-forsaken state. Their roads suck. I just feel dirty whenever I pass through.

KU vs. MU, while not the most prestigious on the national stage, may very well be the most heated rivalry in college sports - definitely the only one that resulted in 143 deaths on one side. Damn slavers.

Rock Chalk, baby. Kick some tigger arse this weekend.

Not to downplay the rivalry with Mizzou, I hate them as much as anybody. But, around thirty years ago, when I was in the KU Band, we had bottles thrown at us while playing at K-State (but not at Missouri), and at home had members tripped by KSU fans during the Pre-Game run-in down the Bowl steps. I would say my dislike for KSU is about equal to that of MU. It's just that KU has produced more wins over KSU.

From a pure sports rivalry, Missouri is #1. K-State is a close 2nd.

In 1976 when KU romped all over MU 41 to 14 the entire KU motorcade of nearly 300 band members was pulled over by the Missouri State Troopers after the game and detained for over an hour. During that time the Kansas Trooper escort and bus drivers were threatened with arrest for exceeding the posted speed limit of 70 by 25-30 MPH. The tuba section was instructed to calm down before they were cited for disorderly conduct. This was mainly due to verbal assaults directed at the Missouri Troopers and the state of Missouri in general.

Needless to say, each time I see anything about MU sports on the tube I remember that long wait on the side of the road back in 1976. You have to remember that our day had started at Murphy Hall about 5AM and it was now fast approaching midnight. All we wanted to do was go home and get some rest, but as we had destroyed the Missouri football team and wiped the tiger band off the field - the troopers wanted us to think twice before we came back to the state of Missouri. Or is that misery?

As long as these teams play each other there will always be an intense rivalry. God help the person or group that suggests the schedule be changed so Missouri is taken off the KU schedule.

I agree with Mangino; Missouri is the Number 1 rival.

Those games are typically televised nationally, as in a large portion of college basketball fans actually watch the games to see who will get into the big dance.

Now what if a dead Jackrabbit gets heaved onto the court?  And a coyote head.  And carrots.  And whiskey bottles.  And skittles, M&Ms, water bottles, soda bottles, and whatever else idiot fans decide to throw.

What if the whole student section showed up in "Beat State... Not your...." T shirts?  How about a close up of President Abbot sitting close to somebody in one of those shirts?

Wouldn't that be great.  Just like old times.

Can you imagine what the ESPN/ABC commentators would be saying about South Dakota?  What would the rest of the country be thinking?

It would be EMBARRASSING!  Embarrassing to the State, to the majority of fans, to the majority of students, to the student athletes, to the universities, to the conference, and to the NCAA.

      End of Rant

I don't miss the games one bit.

I'm sure the games will eventually be played again.

My suggestion would be a 3 for 1 contract in basketball beginning in 2010.  Hopefully that would be enough time for most people to forget about all the garbage that has happened.  If there are ZERO inappropriate incidences causing game stoppage after those 4 games, we can talk about 1 and 1 contracts.  If there are incidences causing game stoppage during any game, its a 2 for 1 contract against the host school until the garbage stops.
In all seriousness, I have been involved with USD as a student-athlete then an alumn for about 15 years now. The dead rabbit/coyote days were long gone by the time I got there. I did see one incident of carrot tossing a few years back at the Dome...it was a STATE FAN who was doing the tossing, trying to get a T called on the home team, and it worked until security got a hold of him and tossed him. So other than some t-shirts and some razzing, nothing has really happened.

National TV. Have you ever been to a big time D1 contest. In Iowa City I have seen shirts with the MI helmet with the words F--K MICHIGAN, Mo Clarett perp pictures on shirts, all sorts of anti ISU stuff printed that made me blush. I don't think Duke and UNC have a very civil rivalry...Cameron Crazies have gone overboard at times. I don't even want to get into some of the SEC rivalries, Auburn/Alabama, people have died over that one.

No, I think our little rivalry is child's play and we wouldn't embarass ourselves one bit.

I think some are just overly sensitive.

Not to dwell on the subject but most of these quotes seem to be from incidents from about thirty years ago as well. Could we all be getting more polite? I think, contrary to generally accepted opinion, that the younger generation isn't necessarily going to hell in a hand basket and that the quality of life in toto may not actually be deteriorating-- except in Iraq that is.

The bottomline is that the "rivalry" will be back on WHEN WE SAY IT IT! President Abbott, Mr. Nielsen, Coach Merkort get in line and pucker up to do some serious booty kissing. Yote53, get in line too. You boys arent going anywhere unless the Rabbit says u are. Invite to Coughlin? Not unless the Rabbit says so. See the inside of a "real" basketball facility? Only if the Rabbit invites you. Join the Midcon? Not unless the Rabbit says so. So lay low, take any smack that gets dished out with a smile AND DONT ANNOY THE RABBIT! GOT IT?

I attended most if not all the games in the last 5 years State was in the NCC, and there were several rabbits/coyotes thrown onto the court. Not sure where you were. Maybe at some "big time" DI contest?

I agree that both sides were guilty in the past.

However the final 2 years of DII, IMO USD took it to a totally classless level. Just my opinion. If you think it was childs play, I think it says more about the kind of person you are than the State fans who are offended.

I agree that the T Shirts wouldn't be embarrassing in that they aren't shown on TV. Regardless if you think they were great, IMO they were an embarrassment to your administration, your school, and the state. If you think they were clever, I think that says more about the kind of person you are than the State fans who are offended.

Dr. Oein is our athletic director, and is respected and well liked among State fans. I will support him 100% if he chooses to not schedule USD as long as he is AD on the T Shirt incident alone.

Any incident in a nationally televised event which stops play will draw national attention. If a dead animal were thrown on the court during a conference championship, it will be on Sports Center. Is that really the kind of exposure you want?

                    Re: USD (Coyotes) Go D-I

Ahh memories. As a former Wisconsinite and thirty year Missouri resident, I immediately thought of Dan Devine's dog. The classic story of shoddy fan behavior. Turns out to be semi-urban myth:

Case in point: 1 slain dog.

“In the four year since he abandoned a distinguished career at the University of Missouri to join the Packers,” the article read, “Devine has been the target of physical threats, personal insults and professional criticism. He had been sabotaged by his assistants, undermined by owners, and harassed by hostile fans, who have literally pursued him to his front door. Early one morning two years ago, the Devines were awakened by a sharp bang: one of their dogs had been shot outside the house.”

And this, as fellow Missourian Paul Harvey would say is the rest of the story--

                    http://www.classicwisconsin.com/features/dandog.html

I guess that's why the Rams and Chiefs still stoop to playing those miserable Cheez-heads.

I thought there were two good articles in today's argus. The first one is written by Stu and the second by Terry. It seems to me like USD's AD still thinks that they deserve to have us come to their house. Maybe the rivalry will hold off for a while?

I remember a lot of the incidents from both sides, but the only bottle I ever remember hearing about being thrown at a player was at USD and I believe it hit SDSU's Paul MacDonald during the introductions. I wasn't at that game so I may remember it wrong. I do remember that the criminal that did is now exactly that as he was quickly arrested and shortly there after convicted. Now I'm not saying that it never happened at SDSU and would love to hear the story about it if it did. Send me a pm.

There is a poster named Hammersmith over on the NDSU forum board who has gone to a good deal of effort to explain the significance and timetable for the XDSU’s and what they mean to a conference for autobid purposes.  These are important considerations for conferences as they study whether or not they should add members and who they should add.  It is worth reading.  Don’t read just the part that I am quoting below.  Go forward and backward to get the full significance.

                          http://www400.pair.com/bisonvil/cgi-...64832702/45#45

“It depends on which sport and conference you are talking about. For football and wrestling, NDSU will begin counting in 2010-11, or two years after NDSU joins the conference, whichever comes later. For all other sports except men's basketball, NDSU will begin counting in 2018-19, or two years after NDSU joins the conference, whichever comes later. For men's basketball, NDSU will count toward the total membership requirement in 2016-17, or immediately upon joining the conference, whichever comes later, and will count toward the continuity requirement in 2021-2022, or five years after joining the conference, whichever comes later.

Doesn't that just make things crystal clear?     ”

Sorry about not having that in a proper quotation box.  I still have to learn how to do that.

This explanation makes me feel very fortunate that the Mid-Con has already invited SDSU and NDSU to join.  It makes me wonder if they can even consider any other transitional schools at this time or in the next decade.

Thanks to NDSU’s Hammersmith for explaining this.

No need to PM because the details escape me. I was sitting in the end of the old field house, the bottle was a pint (small at least), hit the player but not directly on the head, no real damage was done and the game was stopped while the glass was cleaned up. Don't remember any arrests, inquisitions, etc.

Things like this used to happen at both the Augie and USD games, so I would think there was about a 25% chance that it was Augie. If I was guessing, I'd think it happened in 65 or 66.

Again, for the record, I think I used the term cold-cocked in describing the incident. That was journalistic excess. If I remember correctly it didn't hit his head and the player wasn't seriously injured and kept playing.

Is that really the kind of exposure you want?[/quote]

Just ask yourself this question, what is more embarrasing actually having an administrator that commits unethical behavior or having fans that make light of it. People that are making light of it aren't breaking any laws. The person that committed that behavior did, end of story. So before you start ridiculing others take a look in your own backyard before throwing stones at the USD people. Actually right now most of the hatred is coming from SDSU people right now.
