Right now I think Iverson is Nebraska's recruit to loose...
I am afraid you are right. I have talked to Colton's Dad, who won't give any clues, but from everything I hear, looks like UNL is on the inside track. I guess he will stay in the upper mid-west.

Jack4Life, just from your statement, it appears, dad is not a fool. Being a coach himself and no doubt has participated in recruiting not only at Mount Marty, but also when he was an assistant at USD under Doug Martain, he probably saw what loose comments could do to the entire process. Since he is considering his own flesh and blood, namely Colton who has offers that only he dreamed of, I really respect him for handling this matter in this fashion.
I think its tough on parents when they find their son or daughter in a recruiting frenzy and its so easy to say too much. Chuck Iverson I think realizes that the one who signs the letter of intent will be his son. So why not protect him.

Re: Top prospects including Colton Iverson

Have to agree that Colton coming here is a big-time longshot. My guess is the SDSU coaching staff would be best served by keeping in touch with Colton and telling him that he has a home here of course but if he goes somewhere "bigger" and it doesn't work out that he could always come home!

Yet, I can't completely rule the Jacks out. Wouldn't it be attractive to a kid of his skill level to want to come to SDSU and help them to:

        1. Win the first championship at the D-1 level?
        2. Lead a team to the first NCAA tournament bid?
        3. Be THE man on campus?
        4. Get a fantastic education? SDSU is a great school with many highly rated areas of study?
        5. Play in front of friends and family all the time?
        6. Become one of the all time greats at THE school in South Dakota.

These type of things could make a what would seem a simple decision a little more difficult. In general, an athlete is going to want to take themselves to the largest stage possible but it is choice that each one makes for themself. I don't know anything of this young man other than he must be pretty good. It depends on where he sits on things. Is he froma family of Jackrabbit fans? If he wants to be an engineer or any number of other career paths, SDSU would be a fantastic place to get his education.

The lure of the bigger conferences and bigger arenas will probably win out in his case but things can change in a hurry (i.e., Jill Young) and a student can decide to move closer to home or back to a smaller city or school for any number of reasons.

In the end Colton will make the decision for himself but I do hope that we have someone filling him full of blue and yellow Cool Aid!

        GO JACKS!

I suspect our biggest chance to get Iverson at this point would be if his high school sweetheart was bound and determined to go to SDSU.

          (No, I don't know anything . . . )

Filbert, Abby is a very fine athlete in her own right. She is only a Junior this year but SDSU better get recruiting if your objective is to be accomplished!

His parents are top notch people and fully understand the process. It would be foolish for anyone in the family to say anything that could be taken out of context. The best idea is to remain quiet. I wish nothing but the best for Colton. Although would be nice to see a little yellow and blue on him.

The Yankton paper is reporting that Tubby Smith will be the speaker at the Yankton QB club on Wednesday. Not sure if this means anything, but the St Paul Pioneer Press reported yesterday that Colton wiil commit to the Gophers in the near future.

Bigticket, the article in the Pioneer Press doesn't say that Colton will be committing to U of M. It says he will probably announce his plans this week, possibly as soon as Thursday. The following is the article I assume you are talking about.........

Tubby to get a big commitment soon?
South Dakota big man Colton Iverson visited Nebraska over the weekend, which could be his last visit before he decides on a school.

Iverson, a 6-foot-10 senior forward from Yankton, S.D., came away pleased with his visit to Minnesota the previous week. Gophers Tubby Smith and his staff have been recruiting Iverson hard for some time now. An announcement this week is likely. Possibly as soon as Thursday.

The Yankton Daily Press reported that Tubby Smith will be the featured speaker Wednesday at the town's Quarterback Club meeting. Could Smith also be there to seal the deal with Iverson? We'll see.

Iverson would be Smith's first big-time recruit at Minnesota. He also was offered a scholarship by two-time defending national champion Florida.

The verbal commitment to Minnesota came today from Colton Iverson that says he is going to enroll at the University of Minnesota. He was interviewed by Jeff Culhane on the In the Zone show. This is the Vermillion radio sports show.

Not nitpicking Nidaros, but Culhane communications moved it's studio to Yankton several years ago.

No problem, in fact that is what their website said. They were doing the Zone show from the Meridan Bar and Grill in Vermillion the day I was listening. Without thinking I thought the radio station and Culhane were all one body, but maybe not.

Not nitpicking either but the Meridian Bar and Grill is in Yankton home of the Meridian bridge.

Never been to the Meidian must be downtown or near the bridge?

None the less, we lost Colton, but I am happy he is going with Tubby Smith. That could be an interesting team to follow in the near future.
