    Re: report on women's bb...............

Biggest thing that is needed to be changed in men's and women's is refereeing. It was just awful and made for physical, low scoring games esp. in the mens. Nobody wants to see that. As much as people complain about NBA refereeing, it is much better than college.

It kept players and fans in the game, even in 25-point blow-outs, because the loser still could pick up a point or two.
It was one quarter point for each quarter won. There was a second scoreboard which started at zero each quarter. Three points were awarded to the winner of the game, thus a total of seven points in the standings were up for grabs each game. A sweep of all seven points by one team was a rarity. So was a four to three quarter point advantage where the losing team actually won three of the quarters in the game. It was a lot of fun. However, I am not sure it would translate well to college basketball.

This would seem to be an excellent place to start. Relatively inexpensive, too.

Simply start getting really, really serious about calling fouls on any player whose initiation of contact gains him/her any advantage. Any contact, anywhere on the court--offense or defense. On "close" or 50/50 calls, take the decision out of the ref's hands--just call double fouls on both players. Clean up the game.

You'll have a few weeks of REALLY ugly, unwatchable basketball as the players figure it out. Star players will foul out. They'll figure it out that much faster, watching the last minutes of the game from the bench.

The coaches will probably take a bit longer to figure it out, as some have based their entire careers on--essentially--cheating with excessive physicality, getting away with it on the theory that "the refs can't call 'em all." The refs need to start calling them all. Some of those coaches will probably not be able to adjust. How horribly unfortunate for the game. (Exaggerated shrug).

The eventual result will be a MUCH better-flowing game, more wide open, players getting more open, more easily, for better, more makeable shots. Shooting percentages go up.

(You will probably need to widen the lane to the 16-foot NBA/FIBA width from the college width to open up the interior game, too. Get out a few buckets of paint.)

It will also be encouraging to have the contact from defensive players be called in both men and women. The arm bar that has become a popular defense for getting beat by an offensive player will again be a foul as well as the hand checking by defensive players. The charge/block will still be a difficult call with an advantage going to the offense with the latest tweak. Jackdaniel had a good find with this article.

Aw man, but I just got used to NOT hearing the lady in row 10 yell "MOVE...GET ACROSS THE LINE" during womens games when we were bringing the ball up.

It only took her a half century to figure out there was no 10 second violation.
