    Re: More Conferences changes today

More D1 schools in the region would just mean State would have to up their game in recruiting. Success on the field/court and facilities will help that along. As will reputation in academics. I think State is making the right moves to compete.

I'd say that the Athletic Department and the student-athletes are doing their parts extremely well. The rest of the Jackrabbit community is stepping up too, funding the necessary infrastructure improvements to keep the momentum rolling.

Don't stop now, everyone--keep pushing ahead.

As long as they don't bring football I don't think the other sports are a terribly big deal with recruiting. The basketball teams bring on average 3-4 scholarship players a year. No doubt it might make it a little tougher, but it shouldn't be a big deal. Now if they brought football D-I then its different because you are talking 18-25 recruits a year where 6-12 come from the upper mid-west.

Agreed, I don't there would be hardly any impact if the league added one MN school. Sure it would create another mouth to feed but it would also give the Summit a bigger presence in MN. Long term I think the league needs a MN school.

Can the Minnesota taxpayers afford a Minn college moving up to Div 1 plus supporting the Minn Vikings?Seems like the added burden might be too much.I jest....kind of?

If they drop football I don't think cost would be that bad. The thing is cutting football without pissing off your donor base.

TJ: I agree regarding adding 1 MN school. I think it would solidify the Summit.

                  "Taxpayers"

SD taxpayers haven't paid a dime for SDSU's move to D-1.

Zoo, we may all assume that that will not be the case should a MN school move up. The taxpayers of the state will need to pony up should one or both make the move. St Cloud retained FB because the students agreed to an increase in activity fees. That will likely not be enough to fund a jump from D2 to D1.

This is correct and for the Minn. schools to do the same its going to take a vision, and careful spending. A huge taxpayer subsidy would no doubt make it easy, but doubt there is much apetitite for that right now. For SCSU and MSU-Mankato to go D1, is a possibility that will require cautious planning from a financial angle. They need to make all the necessary studies that SDSU did before making the move. They might find that this move is not feasible and having the one D1 sport hockey is their best option.

Interesting story out of Texas - could be bad news for the WAC. Texas Governor Rick Perry has a bill on his desk that will create a new UT University, but will close UT Pan American - future member of the WAC, and UT Brownsville - NAIA school.

Looks like a major expansion. Edinberg is the home of D1 athletics for the school and I assume the WAC would pick up the new bigger entity. Only question is whether killing the UTPA name would reset everything as far as eligibility, something I doubt.

It could be that easy, but in the article it said they have not named the school, or the leadership for the new school, or school colors, or mascot. You could get new leadership that thinks a good compromise between NAIA and D-I is D-II. I would call it more of a merger then an expansion, but what do I know. LOL Still if I was the WAC I would have my eye on these developments and you are right the NCAA could add a wrench to the process as well.

I would think that--Texas being Texas--a brand-new 28,000-student institution, trying to bring together four campuses in one region, would take a long, hard look at D-I-FBS football. If nothing else, to create the kind of university community that an athletic program can do. And, nothing would say "We're different than UTPA" quite like a football program. Especially in Texas.
