I can no longer get myself to care about conference realignment. It's all just white noise, and I'm tuning it out.

Xavier and Butler are joining the seven catholic schools......Creighton, Dayton, St Louis and VCU are also candidates to join the new conference...this thing could really shake things up depending how big that league wants to grow....

        Re: More Conferences changes today

I think the Big East & WAC collapses show the value of the Summit's measured approach to expansion over the past 8 years.

The Summit had 9 members in '05, it has lost 5 of them and added 6.

The five out: Chicago State, Valpo, Centenary, SUU, ORU.

The six in: IPFW, NDSU, SDSU, USD, UNO, Denver (in order)

That is, even with the loss of ORU, a pretty decent upgrade both in terms of geography and in terms of athletics. It's also a major improvement in academics.

And it's in no way certain that this would've worked out this well. The Summit could've invited Utah Valley, 'to get SUU a travel partner'. They could've invited Seattle, 'to get the Seattle market', or Chicago State again ('to get the Chicago market'). They could've invited UTPA, Houston Baptist, CSU-Bakersfield and NJIT 'for membership stability'.

They also could've refrained from expanding westward ('because the eastern schools wouldn't like the travel'), and ended up in a desperate need to add members after one or two defections.

I think a fair amount of credit goes not only to Douple, but also to the various university presidents, and also to the economic realities. Nobody's chasing major media deals or BCS bowl money. The Summit's moved pretty prudently, all things considered.

          Re: More Conferences changes today

At this point, I agree with zooropa about Douple and TSL. Recently the loss of Centenary, SUU, and ORU have been filled nicely with UNO and Denver. As much as OU has been vocal about the move west and the location of the basketball tourney in Sioux Falls, they still have the security of a solid conference which must be cash flowing to everyone's satisfaction.

The instability and worries of conference re-alignments, members bolting for other conferences ,etc, is all self inflicted, brought on by over inflated opinions and deep seeded resentment from schools that feel "unappreciated" ( the case of the seven Catholic schools).People nowdays are insecure anyway, always looking for something better and never satisfied with what they have.Either this or they're all money grubbing and chasing after the almighty dollar.I'm not painting a rosy picture in either case.Reap what thou sowes.I never in my wildest dreams and growing up would ever think members of the Big 12 would leave that conference with all the rich traditions it had.The world is upside down to me ,almost foreign.Sorry for the rant,I guess the season has me reflecting more on the plight of humanity, than i should.

I can't blame those schools for leaving the Big East. They were looking at having to go all the way to Texas and Louisiana to play bad basketball teams, in conference, as part of an expansion program driven by a sport they don't sponsor.

This instability has more to do with chasing TV money for football than anything else (TV money is a big part of the BCS bowl payouts).

I agree,I just don't express myself well,in a manner people can easily understand.Yes,they have every right to feel like they weren't given a voice in the future of their institution, which was dictated to them by the football members so they could secure their future.Lots of strife and turmoil going on in the world of collegiate athletics .I just read where a person in Florida gave the Salvation Army a valuable coin for the eighth yr in a row.Lots of good happening in the world too, can't dwell on the negative too long,or i get depressed....LOL

I think it is pretty telling when a conference that has existed for less than 20 years is considered to have rich traditions... Sure the Big 8 had been around forever, but maybe the Big 12 is reaping what it sowed when it raided the Southwest conference for the Texas schools. Heck, a person could probably make a decent argument that today's conference issues date back to the NCAA death penalty for SMU.

Whoever thought Rutgers in the Big 10? That is more than food for thought. Although it is more important for me as a Jackrabbit fan and ticket holder to know what is going on here when the final analysis is in for conference realignment. What is on the "horizon" for the The Summit League? Is there any pulse out there for another university to join Denver's move in TSL? It may be too optimistic to think that TSL could benefit even more with the programs that do not value football as the most important program. The MVFC and the TSL seem to be good anchors for the Jacks at this time since the leap to D-1 was made on a leap of faith and no conference affiliation. The jumps made by many DII schools may have created a ripple on the current BCS situation as much as other factors. Who could have guessed Rutgers in the Big 10? Who can predict the next addition to TSL?

I think you meant to say Mountain West and not WAC.

Mountain West, WAC whatever, its them little out west conferences we don't hear about much out here in the Big 14 or 16 country, or whatever the Big10 is now. By the time those games come on tv everyone over here in the Eastern Time Zone is in bed.

Both the WAC (2-0) and Big 10 won (2-5) 2 bowl games this season. The Big 10 is over rated.
