If I am correct in my chonology of events, when UND was accepted for NCAA D1 membership, they were working under the assumption that UND would get the approval from both Standing Rock and Spirit Lake tribes to use the Sioux Logo. They received the approval from Spirit Lake but did not get approval from Standing Rock by Aug 2009 deadline. In the mean time the legislature got involved and passed a law contrary to the agreement between the NCAA and the Attorney Gen Wayne Stenjeim agreed. UND orginally sued the NCAA in order to use the logo. Then a subsequent meeting with the NCAA this summer in Indianapolis, the NCAA told the ND officals that it would abid with the agreement with Stenjeim and so the ND officals returned to ND with their tails between their legs. This fall they held a special session of the legislature and rescinded the law passed last spring requiring UND to use the Sioux Logo. Now a slimmy lawyer name Soderstom has worked with the Spirit Lake natives and in the background a large contingent of alums in starting a petition to get it on the June ballot. Its a wierd issue to say the least.

I was listening to KFGO AM 790 this afternoon, the Mike McFeely talk show and one of his guests was Doug Fullerton Commish of the Big Sky, who told the listnening audience that the Big Sky would not tolerate the logo and if they tried to use in athletic events UND would be looking for a new conference. He left them with the impression that the BSC does not need UND and their logo problem. It is ludicous for UND fans to make the arguement that the Big Sky needs UND. The green and white folks seem to have an over-evaluation of self worth in the eyes of the Big Sky. Fullerton went on to say that how UND fans view the NCAA as some kind of a overeaching government agency is folly and that the NCAA is a membership organization. If you can not accept the rules then you should not belong.

My take is that down the road, UND might be the largest member of NAIA if they retain the logo and its useage. I dont think Standing Rock is going to approve the useage anytime soon.

I think SDSU should decide not to schedule them as well. Same for NDSU and USD.

And IIRC, the Big 10 schools are forming their own hockey conference, and UND will no longer be in the same conference as the Gophs. Then, MN doesn't have to play UND.

IS UND trying to get kicked out of the Big Sky, so that Summit will ask them again after name issue is put to bed again?

I love being a Jackrabbit. I have loved it since I was 5 years old at my first football game. But, I am not so delusional that I would jeopardize not only the athletic department, but the entire school's reputation over something as silly as a logo. I look at the NCAA as the owner of a company and all the schools being their employees. So, if you don't like the way your boss runs things, quit.

Someone up there needs to take a step back and realize that it isn't what's on the jersey that matters, it is the people wearing it. To take opportunities away from 90% of the student athletes over a silly picture just seems like the opposite of what higher education is about.

That second linnk, an article from the Grand Forks Herald, has some very interested quotes from Doug Fullerton about the Big Sky's opionion of UND and/or the nickname saga.

What a trainwreck. I would agree completely with JACKGUYII - if this nickname saga continues to rage on, UND is going to get kicked out of the Big Sky.
