      More thoughts and observations:

      1) According to advertisements, Mad Jack's now serves beer and does not allow smoking......
1a) I'm waiting for the first bar to try the non-smoking thing.........the Vikes will likely win the Super Bowl first. : : :
1b) Galleria, I think, is the strip mall that is now home to Mad Jacks's.
      2) The news story about the rezoning for Arby's included a city council member admitting that Brookings is a changing place. The old ways of thinking won't prevail.
2a) Thank SDSU and the Innovation Campus for a lot of that.
      3) The state Legislature is VERY reluctant to change the state liquor laws, despite their antiquatedness.
      4) The Brookings airport is the looming 800-pound gorilla in the room because of the high cost that the city will face and the increased (likely a lot of industrial) land that will open up at and around the current airport.

I think that is the case in most small towns. Money is power.

          Re: Economic Development In Brookings

I will say in the 7 years that Ive been here, the city has made a lot of progress, still a ways to go, but its getting better. The one thing this town is terrible with, is clearing the streets after it snows. Its aweful here, Sioux Falls being much bigger clears the streets much more thorouly then Brookings. Maybe the city could make a bigger snow plowing budget by getting rid of one or 2 of the too many cops that this town house, not that it would ever happen.

This sort of talk really makes me miss being in Brookings. I wrote for the paper there for three years (covered cops, county government, Brookings School District and city gov't occasionally--an experience in itself) and I got in on all the rumors that flew around that town. It's funny how petty things can get there. Now I've been out of touch for 18 months. It will be interesting to see what happens next with this DM&E situation, too.

              Brooking$ hit$ a billion buck$

For the first time ever, Brookings exceeded $1 billion in gross sales last year, and local retailers and economic development officials are delighted with the news.

The figure was reported by the Department of Revenue in the recently released South Dakota Sales and Use Tax Report.

A more exact figure is $1.083 billion, compared to $973 million in 2005 gross sales.

Taxable sales in 2006 came in at $483 million, up about 21 percent from the year before.

Brookings Mayor Scott Munsterman said sales improved in almost every sector of the market, but the city saw some great spending increases in both retail and groceries.

Munsterman said he expects the growth to continue.

"I’m predicting that we’re going to be sitting with another good increase at the end of this year, too."

Nice to story on KELO-TV about economic development in Brookings, and how the city is trying to capitilize on a DI transition.

The beat reporter used the term "successful" when speaking of the transition, and the duputy mayor used the term "smoothly" to describe the transition. The media coverage has been very satisfying as of late.

                    Where will the airplanes land?
                    Posted: Saturday, Mar 24th, 2007

Some Brookings County homeowners say they’re having a hard time dealing with the news that they might lose their homes as the City of Brookings corrects its airport problems.

And while most said they hope the city can resolve the issue, the impending decision is like a dark cloud hanging over them.

The city is looking at several options in correcting the airport’s zoning issues, including both on-site and off-site alternatives.

If officials decide to build a new airport, they have already identified a preferred off-site region – a nine-square-mile area southeast of Brookings in Trenton Township.

The on-site options include various plans for realigning one of the airport’s two runways.

City Engineer Jackie Lanning said the airport’s master plan, completed in 2006, identified a preferred on-site option that could move the airport’s main runway to the west.

Plans for each of these locations are much different, but the residents living in both have similar concerns.

Jean and Robert Lacher have lived on their acreage west of Brookings for almost 34 years. Robert is a retired SDSU professor, and the couple continues to grow and sell produce from their land.

"Obviously, we don’t like it," Jean said of the situation. "Our house was built in 1896, and the Wright brothers started flying in 1903, so our house predates flight and the local airport. … This decision could take our business as well as our home, and we live in a floodplain.

What does everybody think of a Buffalo Wild Wings coming to town? Kip Pharis, Pizza Ranch owner, has been mulling over the option of owning a franchise and bringing it to Brookings....Possibly in the old Godfather's building.

I've heard of this as well but I heard it was just going to be a sports-bar type place. If it was a Buffalo Wild Wings I'd say great! Either way I think any type of sports bar that close to campus would do very well.

And nothing wrong with buying out some competition and turning it into a better money maker.

I'm hoping it is turned into a good sports bar or something other than a BWW. I have never been overly impressed with the two or three BWW's that I've been to. Sure, the wings are good but it didn't seem like much more. This is from someone that isn't a big "wing guy" so take it for what it is worth.

If it is a BWW, I'm sure I'll be eating there a bunch because the wife is crazy about wings! What a deal! She decides where we go, I get to pay! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D I couldn't love her more!

                            MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, BIZUN!!!

Maybe a little competition would improve the quality of Cubby's wings, which leave much to be desired IMO. ;D

I'm a big Cubby's fan, I think it has a great atmosphere. Wall to wall TV's with sports and beer, mmmm beer! But it would be nice to have another option in Brookings.

One questions though, is there another liqour liscense available in Brookings? I thought Brookings was maxed out when Applebees came to town.
