  • DWU Tigers

Former SDSU grad assistant Matt Wilber has been doing a heck of a job in his second year as head coach at Dakota Wesleyan. The team is 11-0 (SDSU's was considered an exhibition) and just knocked off the #11 and #2 teams in NAIA this week.

Sorry if no one cares, I just have to have something positive after getting my heart ripped out by the Buy-zun today.

I will say its a remarkable start even if it is NAIA. Wasn't Wilber a grad assist at SDSU? Good job Matt.

Dakota Wesleyan defeated the College of Idaho Saturday night 88-80 in the NAIA national quarterfinals. They'll play in their first-ever national semifinal game Monday night against Davenport of Michigan. If you're interested, the game will be streamed live on kmit.com.

Congrats to Coach Wilber and crew. The NAIA membership is changing. Ashford of Iowa and Davenport of Michigan are new to me. College of Idaho I think I have heard of. At any rate a real accompolishment for Mitchell, and the entire state of South Dakota and DWU. George McGovern has to be very proud.

I did a google on Davenport. Quite impressive in their offerings on 11 campus.

Alan Miller and his wife are going to be wore out by the time this basketball season is over. Four days watching Macy at the Summit Tourney. Going on 4 days in Missouri watching son Jade play for DWU. They'll get home and i assume head somewhere to watch Macy. A few of the bars have bought the naia package so people can watch it on TV. Those bars have been packed. Its been fun. Hope they can win 2 more games.

Should DWU make the national championship, the game will air Tuesday on ESPN3.com. Not trying to get ahead of myself, but just putting it out there.

I curious, what is the difference between Div. II and Div. I in NAIA. Seems like the GPAC would be capable of competing at the Div I. Level. I guess I could google NAIA and get my answer but too lazy. Seems like a real bargain. I remember in the 1950's when SDSU made this tourney but lost in first round to Pacific Lutheran. I think it was the year before NCAA DIV 2 started which I believe was 1957.

I believe that the Divisions are similar to that of the NCAA; larger schools are Division I, smaller schools are D-II.

Basketball is the only sports where they have two divisions. All other sports are single-division.

It must be a choice as far as competition. I looked at their website and they list D1 schools. Several with less than a 1000 enrollment so enrollment is not a factor as many have small enrollments in both D2 and D1.

Could it be tied to the number of scholarshiips ? JUCO's are split into divisions and I think that's how they split teams.
