I wouldn't have such a huge problem with the Arena site if there was an actual plan to develop the area. Zooropa laid out all the issues with building at the Arena site and the lack of city planning for development of that area. Seriously, if they had a decent plan for the Arena site, I would be more inclined to support it. I will not, however, support the location simply because some people are scared of downtown Sioux Falls.

On a different note, DTSF is a great place, great restaurants, bars, etc. Its only going to get better too, so why not continue to make DTSF the focal point of the city? Even if this fails, there will still be attempts made almost immediately to build this thing. It will never go away until its done.

Frankly, I no longer care... basically, the BID-ers have done nothing but throw a temper tantrum since this decision was made. If it passes, great. If it doesn't, you have only yourselves to blame.

I think we're all in agreement that a new events center is economic boom for Sioux Falls no matter where it's built, right? Well why not the current location? First, you're going to have a hell of a lot less cost in infrastructure and property acquisition. Because the property is all city-owned! Unless you want to spend a LOT more money on infrastructure downtown, all you're going to have is a lot of ticked-off visitors. Trust me. Downtown is insane when the Pavillion has something going on at time.... and that only holds a couple thousand people!

But no, there are people on here who figure if they can't get what they want, they're going to take their toys and go home. And frankly I'm sick of it. I can't vote on this proposal, but from what I've read, it's a damn good proposal.

50-year mistake? I wish I had your powers of clairvoyance... maybe you can help me with my lottery numbers.

I can't vote on this thing; I don't live in Sioux Falls. But I'll have no problem taking my entertainment dollars to Fargo, the Twin Cities, Omaha and Sioux City if this thing doesn't get passed.

          Re: Get out and Vote

What I cannot comprehend is how the downtown supporters continue to say that those of us out-of-towners that attend events at the current Arena site drive to the event, and immediately leave town after the event without stopping anywhere else. Let me let you in on a secret - most of us are from smaller towns and rural areas, and when we make the trip in for an event,we shop and eat in Sioux Falls,be in in the mall,or downtown or other areas of town. Just because it isn't located adjacent to the Arena doesn't mean it isn't happening. Money spent in Sioux Falls is money spent in Sioux Falls, regardless of location. Having the Arena downtown will not make people shop or eat downtown. If people's preferred shopping destinations and restaurants are in the Mall,or Menards,or Best Buy or ...,they will leave downtown after the event and go there if that is their preference.

            Re: Get out and Vote

Voting against the development because you want it built downtown is a mistake in my estimation. Downtown Sioux Falls has an excellent plan for continued development that does not need to include the entertainment center venue. Would it add to the allure? Sure it would but with many of the caveats discussed at length previously and by much more involved people than me.

Get it done and support the development of both areas. Downtown hotels will provide shuttles to the event center. Additional restaurants and hotels will pop up in the arena zone. The worst case scenario seems to be playing out here. Too many people with special interests failing to get anything done.

Temper tantrums? Are you sure your not talking about the mayor who is the lead cheerleader who gets crabby when people question his all mightly desicion.
My point is I want what is best for the city. most people are going by their own convience. If its a bother to me I wont go. Seems a little shortsighted when the point is to benefit the city which will happen more DT. Like KUlaw said, if it had a better plan and development around the current site, more people would support it. The benefit comes from new businesses starting and tax revune that comes from sources outsite the event center. If your going to point fingers, blame the mayor for it, it was his deciding vote why its going where it was. He very easily could have done something good for the city but he chose otherwise. Now its our turn to vote and allow the city to do it right.

Former city leaders who built the arena and convention center said after the fact they were wrong and it should have been DT and thats why it was a 50 year mistake. City leaders who thought at the time they new better, yet they realized it didnt work like they thought. a Few hotels built in the area and that is it while many more have moved or closed.

Trust me, I go the the pavillion frequently and it is very quick to get out of there. Not sure why others make it seem so bad. Ever try to get out of the summit turny and home and garden show at the same time at the current site. Takes a good 10 minutes or more to just get out of the parking lot. the pavillion area easily clears out faster then the arena.

This is true for very many. We love downtown Sioux Falls and often spend the night in the downtown Holiday Inn so we can enjoy the night life. Would the event center increase the number of people doing that? Of course it would. Would building it at the arena site discourage people from visiting downtown? I don't think it would.

This never happened at the current site after the arena was built or the addition of the convention center. Guess I dont see how this will happen just because the mayor said it would. If they could show some proof that the current site will develop or there are plans for a shopping or dining area that will change many opinions.

To get the bang for your buck and maxamize potential. the DT site is the only logical choice. Also, many of the businesses that are downtown are locally owned. If increasing people spending money DT means more businesses keep that money intown. Shopping or eating at a national retail store only gives tax money but most of the money leaves the city. If this can help small businesses and SF I don't see how people could be against DT unless their own selfish interests. Well back to work for me so probably my last post on it....untill I post again that is.

If it takes a couple more years untill its built, I am pretty sure SF will still be on the map and can survive. I have family in omaha so I can stay there for free so I will be there too. I expect omaha to content for the summit tourny with or with out a new EC in SF anyway. Maybe we could carpool

So the arena has been a 50 yr mistake? There hasn't been anything good come from the Arena being built?

Yep, it didnt benefit the city as well as it could have. I am not the only one the think so. Not just my opinion. It was good but not the best option. Thats the point I think I and others are trying to make. The current site could be a good plan, but its not the best plan.

Do you think it was a great sucsess?

I believe the statements to which goon referred were made in regards to the convention center and the decision to build at that location.

I don't mind that we disagree. I just don't appreciate being called a whiner or being accused of throwing a temper tantrum because I don't agree with the current proposal. Its not even about downtown, well not totally. I stated in my previous post that if the mayor had developed actual concrete plans for development of that area, I would support that. We don't have that with the current plan. That's my biggest beef.

EDIT: And I'm not saying that you have called those who don't support the current proposal whiners. Sorry if that's the way it reads, not my intention.
