  • Get out and Vote

If you are a Sioux Falls resident able to vote next week concerning the Events Center/New arena. Then please don't forget or make plans now. I've heard the absentee voting is in the thousands already! Whatever side you fall on the issue, as the old Honyokker BHS government teacher used to tell us "If you don't vote, you don't have a right to complain."

Good luck to everybody and their opinions!

    Go Rabbits!

We are at 5 days and counting to decide this issue!

I don't want to take the time to read through all the posts on the Event Center thread (and I'm sure you expressed your feelings there Goon), but are you voting no because you thing the EC is a bad idea or because you think the EC at the Arena site is a bad idea.

I think if the point of an EC is to benefit the city the most I see the down town site as the only good place to have it. It will be the only site I support. The current arena site was a mistake 50 years ago and will if we build it there again will be another 50 year mistake. I can not support it there no matter how bad some people think we need one now. I would rather take a few years a do it right and not rush a 50 year mistake.

I'm with goon. Downtown site is best given the lack of a plan to develop the area around the Arena site.

A number of people I know will be voting the same way with the same reasoning.

But do you ever think the Downtown location would be approved? One way or another, I don't care which location it is.

I don't have a geographical preference. Just get the darn thing built, it will pay for itself and improve quality of life.

                    Re: Get out and Vote

Placing this thing at the current arena location with this financing plan is a huge mistake. The infrastructure your going to see develop in downtown over the next 5-10 years will be staggering and make for a much better enviroment than sitting in a concrete wasteland like Russell. Building it just to get it done is not the solution.

If it doesn't get built now, I hope it never gets built. You get what you deserve.

This is a great thread, and a public service. We should be casting votes on all issues and canidates that we are eligible to do so. The Event Center is no exception. The proposed location works for me, but to the average blue collar person, no location will work, its about fixing the streets first so say the naysayers.

                            Re: Get out and Vote

The way I look at it are there are 3 groups of rather evenly devided view points. build it downtown, build it now and dont build it. 33% each is how I break this down. so 33 percent dont want it no matter what. That leaves 66% who want to build one. The difference is BIN, for the most part just want one built and really dont care where it goes. On the other hand BID want it built, but feel downtown is the only good option to consider. Frankly I think the Mayor dropped the ball because if you BIN downtown, most everyone who wants an EC will be happy. There are enough BID people who will not support the current plan, however many of the BIN as long as its built would support the Downtown site. So to get majority to support a plan, combine forces and gets over 60% of support to build it now downtown.

The reason we are not like "other towns" why people dont want it downtown is the very mindset why SF is always behind the cities around us. We have no one to blame but ourselves. Lets not make a 50 year mistake again. I dont want to be 80 next time SF wants to discus an EC or make changes and we look back and say wow, for 100 years SF couldnt figure it out.

What the city doesn't deserve is another 50 year mistake. This mayor and I guess many people don't get it's the ancillary income from spend at restaurants, hotels and the economic development that happens around this facility. Little to no development has happened in the last 50 years so not much chance it will happen in another 50 years. A city is only as strong as it's core. I have a feeling you are one of those people who is only interested in how quickly you can get in and out of town. That should not be not be the goal if your going to spend 185 million dollars. If this mayor want's more flat floor space than add square footage on to the convention at a fraction of the cost and put the event center in a place where people can enjoy amenities that are in walking distance.
