Thanks for the Link R74...interesting stuff, although I was familiar with some of the info. Two interesting observations:

Since 2002, when SDSU decided to go Division 1, headcount enrollment from 2002 to 2007 went up 1,754 (9952-11706). At USD, which stayed in D-II, enrollment went up 540 (8703-9243). Similarly in FTE, SDSU up 1,549 (8173-9722) and USD 476 (6322-6798).

And the other intesting table was the gender factor. I had heard USD was 56% female and 44% male, but the table shows 5,719 females (61.9%) to 3524 males (38.1%). As I understand federal law on Title IX (I could be wrong) the feds REQUIRE in that case that 61.9% of the dollars spent in athletics must go to women's sports and 38.1% to men's sports period. Anybody know about that? If so, would be interesting to see their budgets (so, and I don't think this is "smack", maybe that is why the football team is taking buses and the women fly???) Very interesting.

I wondered the same thing, so I checked out the definitions used by the feds regarding Title IX. It turns out that, when calculating for Title IX, the feds use full-time undergraduates to determine the proportions. For some reason, there is a huge gender gap at USD in the part-time undergrad numbers(far more women then men). The gap is also wide in the graduate school(not counting med & law). These gaps throw off the total headcount number.

Here was the breakdown for 2007-08(M/W):
Full-time undergrads: 1913/2540(43.0%/57.0%) <- feds use this one
Part-time undergrads: 644/1747(26.9%/73.1%)
Professional Students: 263/259(50.4%/49.6%)
Graduate students: 704/1173(37.5%/62.5%)
Total Headcount: 3524/5719(38.1%/61.9%)

The Board of Regents will announce all 6 SD public universities on Oct. 1.

I will predict that SDSU will remain South Dakota's largest university (I know I am going way out on a limb )

I'll give my annual preview advice: Pay attention to the head count, of course. But a better indicator of the actual scope of a university can be found in the FTE numbers. That's where you'll really see an indication of the relative size and scope of SDSU versus the other state institutions.

Here is a link to a more complete report from the Regents. As Jimmy Jack indicated the best comparison is in the full time equivalents. Our enrollment is 11995 headcount and 9900 full time equivalents compared to USD's 9291 and 6803 respectively. Our headcount and fte are up 289 and 178 respectfully compared to USD's 48 and 5.
