South Dakota ACT scores rise for 2006 class
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota's composite score in the popular ACT college entrance test rose in the 2005-2006 academic year, newly released figures show.
The composite in 2005-06 was 21.8, while the previous academic year's composite was 21.5.
Scores on the ACT, which measures students' readiness for college-level work, can range from 1-36. The average composite nationally was 21.1, compared to 20.9 the previous year.
The test is popular in South Dakota and surrounding states. In South Dakota, 6,807 students took the ACT exam in the most recent cycle.
In South Dakota, the average score for the reading portion of the test was 22.0. The science average was 21.8, math 21.6 and English 21.0
All those scores were up from the previous year and were the highest among any of the previous four academic years, ACT said in a report. All South Dakota's scores were higher than the national averages for the same components.
Nationally, just 21 percent scored the benchmark indicating they are likely to succeed in college on each of the four exams - math, English, reading and science. More than two-thirds hit the benchmark score in English, but barely one-quarter did in science.
In South Dakota, 74 percent of the students who took the test met college readiness benchmark for English, 58 percent for reading, 49 percent for math and 33 percent for science. Twenty-six percent of the students met all four benchmarks.
Among racial groups, only 37 percent of American Indians taking the test in South Dakota were deemed ready for college English, 32 percent for reading, 18 percent for math, 8 percent for science and 6 percent for all four disciplines, based on the ACT results.
White students accounted for 84 percent of those taking the ACT test in South Dakota. Their average score was 22.1. American Indian students accounted for 6 percent and averaged a score of 17.5.
South Dakota male students averaged 21.9 on their ACTs; females averaged 21.6. South Dakota State University was the preferred college for 1,270 of the students taking the test. Next were the University of South Dakota, 682 students; Black Hills State, 388; Northern State, 220; and the University of Minnesota, 211.
