South Dakota State University will strike up a research agreement Thursday with one of the U.S. Energy Department’s largest research centers near Chicago.

SDSU and Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, Ill., will sign a memorandum of understanding that sets up a collaborative relationship between the two entities for research and science-based activity that, the university says, will spur economic development.

University President David Chicoine, who was an Argonne board member while at the University of Illinois, said the agreement will provide a framework for cooperative projects between SDSU faculty and Argonne scientists, and partnerships are critical for scaling up research.

We have a couple of things Argonne needs. First, Argonne needs those kinds of agreements because they are part of the Dept. of Energy and cannot themselves seek government grant funding. In cooperation with universities, though, they can seek NSF grants. The university provides the opportunity for Argonne to get funding and in return, faculty and graduate students from the universities get to work on cutting edge projects. Second, Argonne is doing lots of alternative energy work. If you simply think of where Argonne is, though, they're smack in corn and beans country. The cutting edge in biofuels work is not corn and beans, but cellulosic ethanol production... switch grass. We've got plenty of that here. And that's where SDSU experts offer something that none of the other universities with agreements with Argonne actually have... we have the cellulosic ethanol experts.

President Chicoine really knows how to move vision into reality, and these kinds of agreements where our strengths can be parlayed into opportunities for research are only the beginning. When you hear him speak, it's quickly evident that he knows how to put the pieces together. Keep your eye on that Innovation Campus. It's going to be the center of an awful lot of activity in coming years.
      Holy nutmeg!

Amen, I lived in suburban Chicago area for nine years and the pace of economic activity is so much faster than what we are used to in South Dakota. To have a president with connections to Illinois is the best thing to happen to SDSU. I belonged to professional accounting group that included people from Argonne Laboratories. They were kind of quiet people so did not learn much from them.

Great post JimmyJack - sums it up very well.
