It’s not a Frat, it’s a fraternity. I can give people the long winded speech about how the word frat is stereotyping, but I won’t. I have a few friends who are and were in SPD it’s been a real bummer for every one. Hopefully everything can be replaced and they can get a new house soon. Glad there were not a lot of people in, there, that could have been real bad.

Also AZD is a women’s fraternity, not a sorority. At SDSU they are men’s and women’s fraternities, not frats or sororities. Thank you and good day.

I didn't know the women's organizations were also called fraternities. Why the distinction: sorority v fraternity for women? Just curious.

When a lot of womens fraternities were started, they started before the term sororities. I beleive Chi Omega started like that. When they started they were a womens fraternity. Because the term sorority can be stereotyping also along with the term frat. Its not such a big thing using those terms but its just that they can give the wrong impression about an organization that is not accurate.

Stop picking on these poor fraternity boys. "Muff, Pornstar and goon" are really sensitive. Lets not be calling them "frat boys".

              Gimme a break.

People are obviously very concerned about the fire. Fortunately, the only things lost were material things. The community of Brookings and SDSU will be there to help just like they would be for any other person/family sticken by tragedy.

I'm throwing the BS flag when you come on here and slap JimmyJack for using "frat" and then make a post like this one. Try to see where I am coming from before you take offense. You might learn something.

                Re: Frat Fire

I certainly understand how the use of "frat," with its connotations of togas and kegs, isn't complimentary to members of fraternities and certainly doesn't reflect the reality of most fraternities. I will try to avoid using that term in the future.

My primary concern, though, is that there is a serial arsonist in Brookings who is now putting human beings, and not just garages and cars, in danger.

                Holy nutmeg!

Very diplomatic reply. I, too, share the same concern. If someone is intentionally setting these fires they need to be indentified and brought to justice. Again, please don't be offended just try to understand where I am coming from.

I agree, arson is a serious offense and should be punished very strongly when apprehended and convicted. As far as the "Frat" boys, lighten up Francis.

Ok, settle down spaz. There were no serious injuries, so i think we can get on with that part, if you ask me. Its not a good thing by any means, but it happened and they are going to have to move on. Hopefully they can catch who has been doing that so it doesnt happen to anyone else or cause some serious injuries or death. You can throw your BS flag around all you want, but those are just nicknames, Md, have you ever had one? dont judge someone by a nickname beacause im going to guess you have very little idea what these people are truly like and by throwing the word frat around its could make people have the wrong idea.

Yeah, i couldnt agree more but its more of an FYI about using the term frat. If a person wants to say it fine, but its that at SDSU i beleive in most cases the fraternities work hard to do positive things to aviod being a frat, were as like at USD some like to be called frats, and you can prolly guess why.

                          Re: Frat Fire

OK, I was planning on staying out of this but now I'm throwing my hat in. I had a nickname in college, as a matter of fact many people that knew me only knew my nickname, they never knew my real name. SO WHAT.

Frat is short for fraternity. SO WHAT! My full name is James I go by Jim, is that stereotyping? No! it is shortening my name.

I don't care how you say it people are still going to have the same impression of what happens in those houses/organizations. Blame that on movies, past history, whatever you want. But in this case the name has nothing to do with people's perceptions. The perceptions are the stereotype not the shortening of the name.

Goon, I know you have been attacked on this board before so it is easy to be defensive. But sometimes its better to read things through once or twice to catch the full meaning before you get too defensive. This response is not a personal attack on you, just an attempt to drive a truck through the hole in your logic. Have a good Easter break!

It would make a difference though if people when they call you Jim, had a poor image associated with it. I know its not an attack on me, but all I am trying to to is to let people know around here most fraternities dont want to be called a frat. Call um what you want because people will anyways but its kind of respectful to call by what they want or perfer, If you like being called jim, thats cool, but using frat is a stereotype not a nickname. Beleive it or not, but some fraternities are actually doing things that are positive in this world and that they are trying to break away from the image most people have, and one way is by not using the term frat. Its as simple as that.

This is pathetic. A house just burned down, an arsonist is on the loose, and all you can argue about is the the term "frat". Get over it.

I completely agree, I was just pointing out that frat is not appropriate. Thats all. I hope that is understandable that members and fraternities dont like the term. If people want to keep using it and continuing the stereotpye, I cant stop them, thats their choice. Hopefully they catch who has been doing this. I would hate to see it happen again and turn out with far worse results. Is there any leads or idea or witnesses from any of the fires? Or are there any leads or suspects? I havent heard much.
