  • Re: Mascot News

Filbert's "galloping rabbit" logo churned out a workmanlike 17-7 victory in the SDSUFans.com poll. 17 respondents said "Go For It, filbert" while only seven wanted to keep the logo for use by this humble web site.

So, I guess I'll dust the thing off and send it on up to Brookings. Now I have to figure out a brand new cool logo thingie for the web site. *sigh*

I hope SDSU goes back to the drawing board. The only thing that kinda looks decent is the logo that says Jacks. Maybe if they could use some type of cool font with the word Jacks with Rabbit ears emerging or incorporated from the letter "K" kinda like the New Jersey Devils logo?

or go with a reverse or hollowed image like this corporate design or both.

These look simple, sharp and distinctive. Your logo can be gold and the apparel it is on can be blue or vice-versa.

The rather abstract rabbit figure in the Jackrabbit image above is exactly what I was thinking of for the mascot. Obviously, making a rabbit look aggressive or intimidating isn't easy, and should be abandoned as a concept, as is the rather realistic portrayals brought forth from the consulting firm. I like abstract in our case.

After much foot-dragging, I finally got around to submitting my galloping rabbit.

I took the liberty of adding the following to SDSU's "terms and conditions"
This entry is offered on the additional condition that Section 2.b. of the Terms and Conditions is modified by appending the following:

Should this design NOT BE SELECTED as the winning design, all ownership and use rights to the submitted design will revert to the submitter upon announcement by South Dakota State University of a contest winner, termination of the contest, or at 12:00 p.m. December 31, 2007, whichever is sooner.

The submitter grants to South Dakota State University an unlimited and perpetual license to edit, publish, promote, or otherwise use the logo in any manner without further permission, notice, or compensation, even if the entry is not selected as the winner.
This seems eminently reasonable to me, but it might blow my submission out of the water if the powers that be are listening too closely to their lawyers . . . I just wanted to protect my right to use the thing here at SDSUFans.com if it doesn't get picked, which I wouldn't be able to do the way they had their T&C written. #$@#$ Lawyers (no offense, JackJD...)

Don't be too tough on the lawyers, filbert...everybody ought to have one or two.

I haven't looked at the terms and conditions so can't really comment but there are some fairly standard points one tries to protect based on past (bad) experiences and disputes that have come up. It sure didn't hurt to put a condition on your submission.

Any inside rumors on how the contest is going?

I was just wondering the same thing. Filbert I like your logo. I think it would work. Personally I love the rabbit as it is now. I wish that they would feature it more (although I go a pretty sweet t-shirt at the Sioux Falls Scheels on my last venture to SD). I think the upright running rabbit is the way to go though. Anyone remember back in 2003/2004 when the credit card company was handing out shirts in the Union? The Jackrabbit on the Campanile (a la King Kong on the Empire State building) was pretty cool. They should use that for inspiration (I will try to get a picture uploaded of both shirts after work).

I wouldn't get rid of the Campanile logo or the intertwined SD logo. They are both really good and serve the school well.

Of topic but is it possible to order one of the those CC shirts of the internets or even over the phone some how?

                    Credit Card Shirt:

                    Need more shirts like this:
Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor Liberty to purchase power.

A committee that will choose the next South Dakota State University Jackrabbit has narrowed public submissions to four or five, and focus groups will start discussing them soon.

The logo committee whittled a list of about 250 designs down to four or five two weeks ago, said Jenny Crickard, university relations director. Logos ranged from a soft bunny look to one that appeared to have its feet chopped off, she said, and those who submitted ranged from a 14-year-old to an 89-year-old alumnus.

"The ones we are looking at (range) from something very abstract to a very classic look," Crickard said, declining to e-mail the images. . . . (read more)

I suspect (and this is just a guess, not based on any inside information... nobody's got any information to share, as far as I can tell) that we'll end up with some version of the Phoenix logo with significant changes based on the contest bunnies. For example, it's likely the font used on the Phoenix versions will be kept in the final version, perhaps with a "new" bunny based on the contest bunnies.
                        Holy nutmeg!

Focus groups have been meeting the last couple of weeks across the state and response has been good towards the designs. The designs will be taken to a panel of students in the next few weeks and hopefully by the end of the fall semester if not sooner there will be a new rabbit.

What's your prediction, bluehatman? Will it be a realistic, "traditional" jackrabbit or something real contemporary? Are any designs circulating on campus?

Tough to say. I haven't heard much brought up about the new rabbit really...yet. I think they got these new designs under lock and key as to be as top secret as can be. The reviews I've heard are they are all kind of a variety. I think realistic like rabbit might be a pretty good choice. Hopefully by the end of September we shall see our new logo.
