      Re: Mascot News

I am a pretty simple thinking guy, here is my two cents~!
The updating of logos and mascot characters is nothing new.  Many a institution has undergone this procedure before.  Let's not reinvent the wheel here.  We are in a pretty good place right now...why not just update and modernize, not completely redo the whole look.

      1. Update the current Rabbit...make the rabbit more forward in approach ...coming at you...not running from the side.  A more realistic and less cartoony image would be preferred.  Montana Rabbit posted earlier...Seriously making an intimidating bunny?...we are better off putting rabbit pawprints everywhere on campus.  That would be unique! 8-)

      2. Update and standardize the style/font that is used to reference the university...Use it everywhere letterhead, webpages, uniforms, signage, apparel.  How about the font which is on our multi-million dollar Daktronics scoreboards?  They look pretty sharp and likely to be around as long if not longer than the next update "may" be needed.

      3. Update and modernize the interlocking SD.  Looking through the baseball media guide this weekend,(page 63-to-65 - link below) the constant in old photos is the "SD"  Don't twist-it or stretch-it.  Make it a straight up bold font.  Maybe some metallic shine to it...like the medals and hardware in the trophy room! Same colors, just make it shine.

      http://www3.sdstate.edu/ClassLibrary...Guide_2007.pdf

That's my 3 step plan, ...and I don't think it would cost a semesters worth of tuition to get it done.  I feel better now...good night...

        Re: Mascot News

I've been out of town for a couple days, so I'm hopping in late with my comments and I'll probably just restate what has already been said, but that's ok.

Regarding Designs 1 and 3 - We are neither the Cottontails or the Abstract Cottontails.  We are the Jackrabbits.  Either of these could be made to work if the rabbit was longer and more powerful in the hindquarters, like a Jackrabbit.

Design 2 looks to me like a deranged clone of the UMKC Kangaroo, which does kind of look like a rabbit.

The best look is the Rabbit over South Dakota State Jackrabbits.  Only Design 1 looks ok with the JACKS-Rabbit head.

The horsetail or poop spray or whatever you want to call it, just doesn't work on any of the 3 designs.  I guess it indicates speed which is certainly appropriate, but it needs help.

No matter what the final design, I'm sure I'll have it on a shirt.  In time for football season I hope.

        GO JACKRABBITS

Just updating the SD would work if we were the University of San Diego or possibly if we were the University of South Dakota. But there is a concern, when you're talking about branding, that you don't want to confuse people. You and I know that a yellow SD on blue means South Dakota State. But travel 250 miles in any direction and most people wouldn't know what that SD stands for. Part of the new branding effort involves de-emphasizing SDSU and putting the emphasis on South Dakota State, Jackrabbits, and Jacks, since those are unique names that refer to only one university.

            Re: Mascot News

Good point. Fight song aside, South Dakota (SD) stands for the University of South Dakota, just like it's Michigan-Michigan State, Kansas-Kansas State, etc. So, in real terms, the SD is, at the very least misleading, and an interlocked SDS or SDSU would still confuse things with San Diego State.

There are altogether too many paw type logos, including USD. However if no one can do it right (and I think they can-- the local gratis logo was a good start) then a lucky rabbit's footprint on the helmet would still be better than that ugly piece of professionally developed crap.

Yeah, I know I changed it moments after I posted, the theme I made didn't match the logos color scheme, different yellows and blues all over the place doesn't look good. I like your logo though why not use it here?

Well, I was waiting for SDSU to announce their new logo first, but now, since I'm kinda tired of waiting, it's all dependent on my making some time to work on the site here a while and come up with a newer, better overall look (and, of course, complete the migration away from YaBB). It's coming . . .

I have offically changed my mind and think design #1 is best although they need to lengthen him out some. Right now I still think he looks too much like a cottontail.

. . . For the most part, hares and rabbits differ in appearance, with the larger hare appearing more streamlined and wiry, with larger back legs and feet and very large ears that stick straight up from the head. The many varieties of jackrabbit are among the most well known hares in the Americas, along with the Snowshoe Hare, famous for changing its color seasonally as a form of camouflage. . . . I think that I am in agreement with Doc on this one.  I liked number 2 at first but the more I look the more I like the profile of number 1 vs the head on appearance of number 2.  The thing that I liked about number 2 is the larger Jackrabbit style ears.  I think the ears on number 1 could be altered a bit to change the appearance from cottontail to jackrabbit.

I can live with number 1 for a few years until an update is due.  In fact, I think that I could like number 1 except for the version with the swoosh tail.  I like the version with the words South Dakota State the best.  That is the one that I want on my next SDSU clothing purchase (if it is chosen as the final design).
