Shocking news over the weekend. Doc Miller was a legend not only for SDSU, but in chronicling the history of small-town South Dakota. Though when you talked with him, he was just as down-to-earth as anyone. I was very fortunate to take several courses with him when in was in school. He was probably my favorite professor.

Not going to lie, this hurts.

The losses of mentors like Dr. Miller definitely underscores the often underappreciated, yet sustained, influence they have on us.

We definitely lost a great historian. I bought one of his books while visiting my County Seat in DeSmet about Laura and her treatment of Native Americans in her novels, Dr. Miller writing did not read like a comic book, very involved though interesting. I learned that Laura and her daughter were not fans of FDR and his New Deal programs. I remember Dr Miller and his Boy Scouts doing coat checks at basketball games.
