SDSU hits the road for community meetings

University leadership will take to the road in May to host a series of dialogue and listening sessions across the state as part of the university's process to develop a new five-year strategic plan.

Beginning Friday, May 11, top SDSU administrators will visit Mitchell, Winner, Pierre, Lemmon, Sioux Falls, Watertown, Aberdeen, Rapid City, ending up back in Brookings on May 24.

The meetings are open to the public; the Brookings location is yet to be determined.

Area residents are invited to attend and offer their input and suggestions to help the university set its direction for coming years.

The sessions will follow a similar format to campus meetings held with faculty and staff during February, March and early April: an SDSU discussion leader will offer a brief overview of the process, then facilitate a conversation with community members. . . . (read more)

Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill raised the topic, saying the city’s plans center on increasing the availability of higher education to attract both employers and potential employees.

“Just by nature of our geographic location … for those folk that are here and can’t very easily go to a regular campus, it’s a huge deal for us here,” Gill said.

SDSU held a listening session in Pierre on Monday at its new Pierre Regional Extension Center as part of the process for developing its next strategic plan. The Pierre meeting was the third of nine sessions scheduled around South Dakota in May to gather citizen input as SDSU builds a strategic plan for its future. . . . (read more)
