Besides that after the first few seconds the SDSU ad goes in a very different direction.

In advertising, sometimes you only get a few seconds. Differentiate, stand out, or people aren't watching anymore. I agree that the SDSU ad is better. The last 20 seconds or so are good. Also, if the audience includes 18-year-olds, I'm not sure historical photos are the greatest attention-getter. Parents might watch, though.

I saw that commercial during the game broadcast also. Funny thing is at the 22 second point they flash a picture of guy wearing a Harvard T-shirt. I wonder if that is a subliminal message that they offer the same quality education as Harvard? Sounds like something USD would do.
