        Re: More bad news

        No cuts are pleasant.

However, I think it fitting that these cuts in service will directly impact people who loudly supported reduced funding.

If rural legislators and their constituents want SDSU's funding reduced, it seems just that those cuts should impact the level of service they receive from SDSU.

And I doubt that SDSU would have had freedom to make these cuts if they had openly discussed cuts to the extension program during legislative hearings.

          Re: More bad news

          From the President:

Program and administrative adjustments account for 84.6 percent of the $3.825 million. Reorganization accounts for 3.8 percent, and the remaining 11.6 percent will be realized through efficiencies.

As a result, 55 employees received layoff notices in the past seven business days —14 from the university, 31 within the Agricultural Experiment Station and 10 from Cooperative Extension Service offices on campus. Another 35.8 positions will be eliminated from vacancies and retirements. The contracts for 105 faculty will be reduced to nine or 10 months. Most of these adjustments are faculty with Agricultural Experiment Station appointments.

Five degree programs will be terminated over the next two years — bachelor’s degrees in career and technical education, engineering physics, electronics engineering technology and manufacturing engineering technology, and the master’s degree in physics. A sixth degree, software engineering, will be suspended. Additionally, two specializations — park management (within the park and recreation management major) and media production (within the journalism major) — will be eliminated.

The reorganizations include the dissolution of the Department of Horticulture, Forestry, Landscape and Parks and the AgBio Communications unit. A new Department of Natural Resources will incorporate components from four existing departments — Wildlife and Fisheries; Horticulture, Forestry, Landscape and Parks; Biology; and Animal and Range Sciences. The Department of Physics will be eliminated in the College of Engineering and the physics program assigned to the College of Arts and Sciences.

Four units will be closed within the Agricultural Experiment Station — the Olson Biochemistry Analytical Services Laboratory, the Soil and Plant Tissue Testing Laboratory, and the research stations at Highmore and Miller.

Today’s announcement does not include the net reduction of 20 field positions as part of the Cooperative Extension Service reorganization that will take effect in October. That plan was announced to Extension employees on Tuesday.

Oh, and I almost forgot... along with those deep cuts, we'll welcome a couple hundred additional students next year.

              Re: More bad news

Nothing unexpected here---bulk of the cuts are in services SDSU provides to the state of South Dakota, which as I said before, seems just given that the state of South Dakota does not see a value in those services.

Although, without those additional students (and their accompanying tuition, fees, and auxillery services payments), these deep cuts would be a little deeper yet.

A sad day at SDSU for all.

It could be worse, look at PA....

The University of Pittsburgh’s budget was slashed from $160.5 million to $80.2 million, and Penn State’s from $334 million to $165 million.

This was in 2010, but you get the idea.

Almost all states have cut funding, and most Public Universities have been forced to trim, re-organize, and increase efficiencies..

Why is this happening? Is it because government does not creat jobs? Seems like unemployement claims will increase down the road. So much for saving tax payer money by cutting programs. It works everytime. I am being saracstic but there is more to come.

We are disappointed by these cuts because they are contrary to the original intent of the establishment of SDSU — a land-grant school created to support South Dakota agriculture.
How is SDSU supposed to provide a service that the state refuses to pay for?
